On CD for the first time! It was this very band that in 1969 composed and recorded the then quite popular "Evil Woman" - a track known from the Black Sabbath debut (not to be confused with the song known from records by Canned Heat and Spooky Tooth)! A big deal! The very good debut album by the American group Crow contained a solid portion of heavyish and slightly bluesy rock (with Hammond organ), with elements of late psychedelia and a pinch of soul (trumpets on three tracks) - resembling the output of Steppenwolf, Vanilla Fudge and to some extent The Doors. This is the absolute canon of American playing from the late 60s! Highly recommended! -

The first two albums on a single CD! Both records are dominated by wonderful guitar playing with great vocals - in the tradition of Cream, Hendrix, Traffic and the late Beatles (melodies). The brilliant second album is for me the quintessence of old-school American heavy playing. Striking and melodic guitar parts; a strong but not primitive rhythm section; memorable, at times improvised tracks based on simple but oh-so-effective riffs. In fact the band sounded as if it came from Great Britain! Until recently I thought that the more psychedelic first album was somewhat worse than the "heavier" second - I was wrong. A must! -

A beautifully produced three-disc box set containing recordings from what is, in my opinion, the most interesting period of this popular band's output (1967-1969), that is, made after the departure of Stevie Winwood, who was replaced by the 17-year-old keyboard player Eddie Hardin! In spring 1967 the hitherto rhythm'n'blues band began a fairly serious flirtation with psychedelia, resulting in two fantastic singles and the soundtrack LP to the cult film "Here We Go Round Mullberry Bush" (here also with additional material from the same session). The band's best moment, however, was the fourth album in the discography, the superb LP "With Their New Face On" (January 1968). In my opinion this is genuinely stunning playing - something like a cross between The Artwoods and the psychedelic Beatles, The Move, Procol Harum and with a pinch of Cream. In addition, the almost progressive album "Funky" from 1969, not seen on CD for 15 years, has been added, a mixture of everything that was being played at the time. All three records have been garnished with plenty of bonus tracks, and the third disc includes, among other things, previously unreleased, fantastic sessions made for BBC radio. Fans of the band need not pay attention to the fact that some of this material was previously available. The whole thing lasts four hours, and the set also includes a very nice booklet, so it is certainly worth being tempted! Highly recommended! (JL) -

This is a limited CD, released in a small run, containing the first recorded concert with the then new vocalist Ian Gillan, which took place at the end of August 1969 at the Paradiso club in Amsterdam! This splendid 77-minute CD (a greatly improved and better-sounding version of the good old CD "Ritchie's Blues" from 1989) contains, among others, an early version of "Speed King" (here as the 9-minute "Kneel & Pray") and, leaving aside the version from the LP "Made In Japan", probably the best, brilliantly sung performance of "Child In Time" - a full eight months before the release of the LP "In Rock"! The sound quality is excellent (the source was a Dutch radio broadcast, from 1987), though in the first recording the sound engineers could not cope with the balance (no guitar for half of the recording), and "Mandrake Root" was faded out after five minutes. Fortunately, however, the publisher very neatly worked in the missing twelve minutes from two rare and professionally recorded other performances from the same period! Additionally included is an 11-minute version of "Paint In Black", which did not fit on the single CD "Live In Montreux, October 1969", also released by Sweet Leaf Records. A must! (JL) -

A limited, 78-minute CD, released in a small run, being a recording (taken from the mixing desk) of an excellent Deep Purple concert from the legendary casino in Montreux, Switzerland (the one later described in 'Smoke On The Water') from October 1969 - already in the classic line-up with Gillan and Glover - played a full eight months before the release of the album "In Rock". This is the only surviving full performance by the band from the first concert tour with I.G. and R.G. in 1969 and the only surviving recording of a live version of "Kentucky Woman" with Gillan on vocals! Besides, at the end of 1969 the band played somewhat more progressively than a year later! The sound quality is practically excellent! Note! The 11-minute version of the Stones' song "Paint It Black" was moved to the CD "Live In Amsterdam, August 1969", also released by Sweet Leaf Records! A must! NEW, SEALED. (JL) -

Released in a beautiful, gatefold, laminated sleeve (inside which are several nice photos of the band), a single European vinyl, LIMITED TO 500 COPIES, containing the first recorded concert with the then-new vocalist Ian Gillan, which took place at the end of August 1969 at the Paradiso club in Amsterdam! An excellent and quite inventive compilation from 2004, containing the most interesting tracks from the first three albums, with the vocalist Rod Evans and the bassist Nick Simper (1968-69). It was a very underrated line-up - a million times better than the one with Coverdale and Hughes! The record is very attractively released and contains several rare and unpublished mixes (some sound like other versions) and a NEVER PUBLISHED, QUITE DIFFERENT VERSION OF "Kentucky Woman"! Plenty of varied moods based on the sound of the Hammond organ, a great rhythm section, and the charming vocals of Julie Driscoll: from psychedelia, through jazzy, almost club moods - to juicy, almost progressive rock.
