I founded the Megadisc record shop in April 1991, and I have been its owner from the very beginning.
From 1996 to 2000 I contributed to the original "Tylko Rock" magazine, writing articles for the 'Magical Mystery Tour' and 'Stary rock' series. Around the same time I was a guest on Tomasz Beksiński's radio programmes on Polish Radio Three (Trójka), in which we played excerpts from old, forgotten records.
In January 2006 the first volume of my book was published, entitled: 'Brytyjski Rock w latach 1961-1979 - przewodnik płytowy (A-F)" (a record guide to British rock). The long-awaited second part came out in 2020.
Regardless of prevailing fashions, at Megadisc we have always sold rare CDs (and collectable vinyl - even before it became fashionable...) of little-known but almost entirely excellent rock classics from the 60s and 70s. Our speciality is genres (or subgenres) such as progressive rock, psychedelic rock, heavy rock, classic metal from the 80s, as well as beat, rhythm'n'blues, glam, and rock-tinged folk, blues and jazz!
Besides more or less well-known titles from the USA, Great Britain and continental Europe, the shop also offers specialist and truly exceptional rock records from South America (especially Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay), Japan, Australia, the Philippines and even South Korea! After all, if good rock records could be made in Romania or Poland in the 60s and 70s, they must have been made in every corner of the globe as well, right?
From 1993 to August 2012 our home was a small (but well-stocked) shop just off Nowy Świat, then for a year and a half we occupied premises on Nowogrodzka Street, from January 2014 at Długa 44/50, and since June 2018 the Megadisc shop has been located at Nowogrodzka 44, at the corner of Poznańska Street. So please remember that besides www.megadisc.pl there is also a real place where you can come and immerse yourself in record rarities. Our selection is aimed mainly at a relatively small circle of specialist collectors, but on the other hand we are happy to advise anyone, and we will certainly help you choose a CD or vinyl as a gift :-)
Anyone wishing to expand their collection of classic rock is welcome Monday to Friday from 11:00-19:00 (and on Saturday until 15:00). We have over three thousand titles in the shop, so probably every customer who loves classic sounds will find something for themselves! All the compact discs in our shop are new. We do not buy used or stolen "second-hand" CDs (as some so-called second-hand shops do), nor do we touch pirate releases (i.e. post-Russian counterfeits of titles generally available on the market), although we have nothing against so-called bootlegs, i.e. rare studio or live records unavailable on the market (but not copies of official releases), issued by small, short-lived labels in runs of 500 or 1000 copies. We obtain all such releases officially from reputable European wholesalers in the Netherlands, Great Britain and Germany.
The shop also has a hand-picked collection of over 4000 vinyl records (LPs) - including both first (or old) pressings of rare titles and recent reissues of rock classics. All sleeves are protected by plastic outer sleeves, and the records themselves are professionally cleaned on a special machine (see: VINYL) - all so that the customer is satisfied and doesn't have to bother with unwanted crackles or hiss (caused by dirt and dust). Unfortunately, due to the limited space in the shop, we are unable to display our entire vinyl selection. So please ask about other titles!
We also have very interesting and genuinely useful books, selected and imported from abroad, on British and American rock, progressive rock, glam and so on. Please ask!
We would like to stress emphatically that we in no way aspire to be a "music supermarket" - where popular and easily available goods may well be the cheapest, but are often past their best, come from a poor (because cheapest) manufacturer, or may even be used... After all, it's not hard to hire a group of people who will "copy/paste" tens of thousands of titles nobody needs (taken from other shops, or from eBay or Amazon...) and decorate them with a sugary, meaningless puff piece for the occasion (e.g. "it was really worth waiting 20 years for this record")... Our prices are as low as they can possibly be, but certain things (the cost of running a shop, transport) cannot be avoided! Besides, we have families to support too :-) Please bear in mind that our repertoire policy is not about waiting for promotions or sales of goods from a company two streets away (and then offering a very limited batch of titles - very cheaply), but about having as many rare titles as possible - usually pressed in runs of 500-1000 copies and often imported from the other side of the world. Records from South America, Australia or Korea cannot cost the same as common goods offered at dumping prices in supermarkets.
Our selection includes almost 15 000 hand-picked titles (and it is constantly growing) from several dozen leading labels from around the world (specialising in reissues). Besides the usual EMI, Universal, Sony/BMG and Warner Bros, these include: Repertoire, Esoteric, Sundazed, Sunbeam, Sanctuary, Lion, RPM, Rev-Ola, Wooden Hill, Past & Present, Charly, Aztec, Hux, Flawed Gems, Grapefruit, BGO, Edsel, Collectables, Collector's Choice, Flawed Gems, Magic, Perfect Circle, Enigmatic, Progressive Line, Long Hair, Red Fox, Pacemaker, Musea, GTR, Top Gear, On The Air, Verne, Absinthe, Far Out, Dead Man, Open Mind and many, many others.
Goods currently in the shop are marked "AVAILABLE". Unfortunately, for objective reasons, we are still unable to keep our full selection in stock. We hope this will change one day.
At the same time, I would like to point out that we work with the largest distribution company in Europe, which offers around a million titles! So please e-mail or call us about titles you can't find in our selection!
Happy shopping and happy listening!
