SKALDOWIE - SKALDOWIE - Wszystkim Zakochanym +11 - POL Kameleon Remastered Expanded Editionprice: 50,00 PLN / 12,50 EUR
Reissue of a somewhat underrated, though very good, Skaldowie record from 1972. The album was recorded at the same time as the progressive "Krywań, Krywań" and in Andrzej Zieliński's intention it was to be a gentler item, closer to pop music... Fortunately that did not entirely work out! Admittedly the tracks on this CD are much calmer than on 'Krywań' or even the earlier "Ty", but at moments Skaldowie also play very nicely and almost progressively here. The whole resembles a combination of the then output of Marek Grechuta with elements of the music of Emerson Lake & Palmer, Blood Sweat & Tears, American folk rock and ambitious pop music. In addition as many as 11 unique bonus tracks. Highly recommended! (JL) -

What a treat for fans of Polish rock! The Austrian label Enigmatic has gathered together 12 tracks (lasting exactly 80 minutes) recorded in 1970-1973, sung in Polish but released in the countries of the Eastern Bloc: in Czechoslovakia (a super rare Supraphon single from 1970); in the Soviet Union (the excellent LP Skaldy from 1973) and in East Germany (3 tracks from the once popular Hallo compilations of 1972-73 - not released on the German CD). Of course the basis of this excellent CD is the two 20-minute versions of the suite 'Krywaniu Krywaniu', though the rest of the tracks are also faultless - even those pop-rock songs that we all know and like... I draw your attention to the Hammond-based Czech single - it is genuinely superb! Admittedly part of this material was once released in Poland (as the very average-sounding CD 'Skaldowie Out Of Poland'), but now the sound is so good and so clean that the older edition can simply be forgotten, although true fans will probably have both titles... If anyone does not believe that Skaldowie could play dynamic and, above all, classy (prog) rock in the style of Procol Harum or The Nice, they will certainly change their mind after listening to this CD. An absolute must! -

Released in 1973 by the label Phillips, a great debut album by a German progressive duo (drums and organ). The music of Sixty-Nine is dynamic progressive rock, improvised and for the most part instrumental, based on ubiquitous Hammond organ parts and dense drumming, somewhat reminiscent of the output of Deep Purple, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Beggars Opera, The Nice, as well as Attila. All the tracks are very good and superbly played, while the 15-minute "Paradise Lost", full of changes of tempo and mood, deserves special mention. Fans of the genre will be delighted. Highly recommended! -

Released a year after the debut, a double live album on vinyl (but containing exclusively brand new material) by the German, progressive formation. Compared with the studio debut, the music on "Live!" (though still decidedly progressive and based on the sound of keyboard instruments) became slightly more accessible - at moments resembling more the live incarnations of bands such as Deep Purple and Birth Control than EL&P. There are also decidedly more vocal parts here, although there is no lack of great, extended, instrumental passages. -

Sindelfingen is a British, progressive formation with a successful album, released privately in 1973, in the vein of the recordings of Yes, Pentangle, early Genesis and Gentle Giant and Caravan garnished with elements of British folk. This remastered CD contains the material from the LP Triangle, released in 1972. And although it is no classic, it is really worth getting to know the work of this band, now almost completely forgotten! Recommended. -

An absolute sensation! CD debut of the brilliant first album (released in March 1969 by British EMI Columbia under the title "Temples With Prophets", and in France in a psychedelic sleeve as "Don Shinn Takes A Trip") by organist Don Shinn, who together with his band recorded a completely instrumental masterpiece, a somewhat more mature version of the early The Nice and Brian Auger's Trinity, with more than a pinch of Edvard Grieg and... Arzachel! Keith Emerson was a great fan of Shinn and it was precisely under his influence that he formed The Nice! This is top-shelf playing and, to tell the truth, it is frightening that until some time ago (up until the release of the great compilation CD "Maximum Prog", with the track "A Minor Explosion" opening it) I had no idea this artist existed! This is an absolutely obligatory item for all fans of psych-prog-jazz-rock (or whatever you want to call it...) with organ. Perfect sound quality. Plus a fantastic single track from 1966, which is also the answer to which band recorded the first progressive (small) record! A MUST! (JL) -

The first (and best) two albums (both from 1968) by a great Danish band playing... in its own way. A captivating combination of pop, psychedelia, folk and hard-rock - something like Procol Harum, Traffic and Earth And Fire. In the lead role is a somewhat hoarse female vocalist, whom someone described as "Grace Slick at 78 rpm", although I would compare her to a more manic, teenage Maggie Bell of Stone The Crows. The young woman wails but also seduces... Plenty of early-progressive playing which, on careful listening, simply delights! Highly recommended! (JL) -

"Magical Love" is somewhat gentler, more varied, but still decidedly rock, progressive and in every respect worth recommending! A female vocal appears on half of the recordings. Remastered 2019 Italian reissue. Highly recommended! -

Superb debut album, released in 1974 by Brain Metronome (and sounding like 1972), by a German formation playing invigorating, energetic and fairly melodic/catchy progressive rock (lots of Hammonds, lots of flute, electric guitars, strong, dense drums) in the vein of the best moments of Jane, Eloy, Out Of Focus, Nektar and Twenty Sixty Six And Then - with a pinch of Jethro Tull (flute). Every track is great - there really is no filler and none of the later art rock whining. To tell the truth, as far as more commercial, heavier krautrock goes, it is an exemplary record and is recommended to all lovers of old rock! Excellent sound! A MUST! -

A five-disc CD box containing five studio albums by a great, progressive German band. The first two titles are excellent! NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER: Desert Places (1974, Brain) The debut and at the same time the band's most highly regarded album. Long compositions, a lot of flute, saxophone and organ, an atmosphere close to early Camel or Eloy. Lost Mankind (1975, Nova) Somewhat more jazz-rock and technical than the debut, but still strongly progressive. Includes, among others, "Go Ahead" and "Beyond The Horizon". As a Keepsake (1977, Nova) A somewhat more accessible album, but still kept in a progressive spirit. One of the favourite records of many of the band's fans. A Whale of a Time (1978, Strand) An even bigger turn towards melodic rock and AOR. Conny Plank was among those responsible for production and mixing. Don't Stop the Show (1981, Polydor) The last studio album. The sound is now almost entirely rooted in the realities of the early 80s, with few of the former progressive elements. -

Released in 1975, the second album by a German band playing refreshing, energetic and fairly melodic/catchy progressive rock (lots of Hammond organ and flute, electric guitars, powerful, dense drums) in the vein of Focus and Jethro Tull, but also Emergency, Sahara and Subject Esq. And although not all the tracks are as killer and played with as much steam as on the debut LP "Desert Places" (Brain, 1974), there is no filler on the album. In addition, a 35-minute, perfect-sounding concert recorded for Swedish radio. -

SALAMANDER - SALAMANDER - Ten Commandments - AUS Progressive Line Edition - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
This great, progressive 'concept album' was made in 1971 around the ten commandments, although in truth only the very emotional introduction sounds like 'Christian rock'. The English band recorded only this one record, referencing the work of The Moody Blues (from 1967-1970) - that is, a rather gentle variety of melodic prog-rock based on the sound of almost ubiquitous Hammond organ, with the guitar usually staying slightly in the background (though capable of hitting hard in hard-rock fashion) and occasional orchestration. Fans of old-school progressive playing should be delighted - even atheists :-) After all, the late Tomasz Beksiński loved this record too... Very highly recommended! -

This is simply the band Subject Esq. under a name changed in mid-1973 and with two new musicians: the former Out Of Focus organist and the guitarist from the debut of the group Gift! Released in March 1974, Sahara's debut album is classic, richly arranged German progressive rock - inevitably stylistically close to Subject Esq. but also to Eloy, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes and Deep Purple (in the middle of the suite a fragment of 'Concerto' is even quoted). There are only 4 compositions on the record, including the aforementioned, eclectic, 27-minute suite! Fans of German progressive playing will be delighted! Additionally 2 excellent-sounding live recordings from August 1973, lasting 14 and 11 minutes respectively, are included. NOTE! The CD begins with the sound of a turntable needle dropping onto vinyl and only after a moment does a fragment of classical music appear and after a few seconds a rock band suddenly comes in... Why am I writing about this? Well, this not very fortunate fragment with the needle did not appear on the earlier CD edition of 'Sunrise' (probably because the label feared being suspected of sloppiness during mastering), so please do not make a complaint on this account, because for the first time the record is presented in its entirety! :-) A MUST! Condition: NEW, sealed. (JL) -

ATTENTION! This is not the album by the popular American pop-prog-rock group of the second half of the 70s, but the long-awaited, remastered edition of the sensational, unfortunately only album by a Swedish heavy-progressive formation, founded by the leader of the group November! Anyone who knows and likes the second and third records by November (as well as the only album, released in 1970, by the also Swedish group Life) will adore (also Swedish-language) Saga, all the more so as the band occasionally expanded its instrumentation to include saxophone, piano and cello! Typical Swedish prog rock, that is, heavyish, intense, moody, at moments folky - 'a bit of everything'. Hard to tear yourself away, although the album requires a few listens. A MUST! (JL) -

Released in France in a limited run, superb, live and recently discovered material originally recorded in March 1975 in Northampton in America, during the tour promoting the LP "Fly By Night" and broadcast by a local radio station. The quality of this CD is almost perfect! Additionally (at the end) is the unique, only known live version of the epic "Necromanacer", from 1975 - unfortunately in poor quality. A modest but tasteful booklet with concert photographs from the tour. An absolute must! (JL) -
RUSH - RUSH - Live At Electric Lady Studios, December 1974 - FRA On The Air - VERY RARE - LISTENprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
This French, 80-minute, fan-club CD contains the full 53-minute recording of the legendary, radio performance that the (then almost unknown) band gave at the famous Electric Lady Studios in New York for several dozen random spectators. The concert took place three months before the release of the LP 'Fly By Night', hence several tracks were presented in slightly altered versions. The sound quality is very good, almost ideal - only minimally muffled. This is one of the most famous items in Rush's unofficial discography - and rightly so. Attention! In addition two tracks from the legendary debut single 'Not Fade Away/You Can't Fight It', released by Moon Records in 1973 (and worth over 1000 dollars on vinyl), are included, as well as an alternative 'Working Man' from the sessions for the debut, and three tracks from Canadian television - still with drummer John Rutsey. Combined with a gallery of very attractive, rare photos, it is an essential item for every fan of the band! A must! -
RUSH - RUSH - Live In St. Louis 1980 - FRA On The Air Edition - VERY RARE - LISTENprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
Released in France in a limited run, live material originally recorded by the Canadian label Anthem in February 1980, during the tour promoting the LP "Permanent Waves" and released in a minimal run on a two-disc, promotional vinyl. In the States this material was officially released by the NBC network, in the series "The Source". This is top-shelf Rush! The 75-minute performance (please look at the fantastic set of tracks, including "Natural Science" and "2112") has been supplemented on CD with the bonus "Vital Signs" - a track not released on the CD/LP "Exit... Stage Left", and coming from the other side of the vinyl single "New World Man" (1982). Perfect sound quality - better than on "All The World's A Stage" and "Exit... Stage Left"! 80 minutes of music. Modest but tasteful booklet with concert photos from 1980. Highly recommended! (JL) -

Another rock masterpiece! To tell the truth I cannot recall a better rock record from 1981! Fantastic, spacious production, catchy melodies and still strong, hard-progressive moods (including "Tom Sawyer", "Red Barchetta", "Limelight" and the 11-minute "The Camera Eye")! It reached number 3 on the American charts (+ a Grammy Award for the instrumental, superb track "YYZ") and at the time Rush was probably the biggest star of the heavy rock current! For many fans it was the last genuinely great album by the trio. A MUST! (JL) -

A limited-run live, perfectly sounding (taken from the band's mixing desk) recording made in Offenbach, Germany, in May 1979, on the tour promoting the LP "Hemispheres". As with the concert from Tucson, AR (released by Top Gear as "Hemispheres In Concert, November 1978"), this is top-shelf Rush! In the middle of the European tour the band stopped playing "Something For Nothing" and "Cygnus X-1", but both of these recordings (recorded at London's Hammersmith a few days earlier) have been spliced into the middle of the setlist! Additionally a modest but tasteful booklet with beautiful live photos from the tour. Below I have attached links to the music, but this CD sounds 10% better than the YouTube transfer! A must! (JL) -

A set containing all the recordings by the highly respected American artist made for BBC radio and television in 1972-1982, remastered from the original master tapes. These are: a performance for BBC Radio One "In Concert" from 6 July 1972 at the Paris Theatre in London and two tracks from 14 October 1975 for "Old Grey Whistle Test" (CD1), a concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London for BBC Radio One "In Concert", 9 October 1975 (CD2) and a performance on 25 January 1977 at Oxford Polytechnic, for BBC Radio One "In Concert" (CD3). Another, somewhat forgotten, krautrock gem! After the self-financed release in January 1971 of the strongly Jethro Tull-like debut album 'Weiss Der Teufel' the band was snapped up by the progressive-folk label Pilz and in the same year the splendid Phallobst reached the shops. The record combined, in a striking way, classic, at times heavyish progressive rock with elements of folk, blues and psychedelia, and its sound, as on the debut, relied among other things on the characteristic flute, restrained but charming vocal parts and of course on extended instrumental parts. So, not far from what the Jethro Tull musicians offered on their 'Benefit' and 'Aqualung'! The German band did not waste its time in the studio - the 'second one' sounded more professional than the (in its own way splendid, raw-sounding) debut; moreover the musicians did not shy away from experiments with sound or striking changes (speeding-ups) of tempo. Of course this is not music that grabs you the first time, but it is very rewarding after several listens! Additionally 5 demo recordings from 1972 are included, intended for the third album 'Avalon And On', unreleased at the time. Without doubt this is the best-sounding CD version! A MUST! Released in 1970 by Polydor, the first solo album by an American guitarist known for collaborating with many leading artists. On his debut album he offered an excellent mixture of progressive rock, jazz, blues and folk. In fact it is hard to define the style of this album unambiguously. We have here almost the best of 1970... Nice, bluesy guitar parts, jazzy brass interludes, subtle flute parts and an almost psychedelic mood. In a word, it is a very good album that will certainly please all fans of the genre. In the late 70s Elliot Randall was a session musician on, among others, records by Steely Dan and Yoko Ono, and also took part in recording the soundtrack to the cult film Blues Brothers. Recommended! -

On CD for the first time! Released in 1975 by American United Artists, the third album in the career of this talented keyboardist may be an enormous surprise to many listeners! How is it possible that this excellent, progressive album from the States, kept at the level of the best achievements of the mid-70s, was so completely passed over/forgotten by fans of progressive rock and by CD publishers! In any case, MQ's best record in the discography is dominated by strongly classicising playing in the vein of Trace, Refugee, Focus, Rick Wakeman and early Queen. And however these comparisons may sound (repellent to some, no doubt), the record is filled with juicy, thoroughbred, almost entirely instrumental, progressive playing based on the sound of organ, mellotron and piano and quite sharp guitar and a solid rhythm section. It is enough to listen to the first two or three minutes of the 20-minute title suite to be sure that we are dealing with a record that is perhaps not entirely original, but in its own way truly exceptional! Oh, Michael Quatro is the biological brother of the once very popular Suzi... Highly recommended! -
