Remastered version of the classic debut by the cult French formation, playing at that time bluesy, progressive rock with clear influences of psychedelia, soul, jazz, Hendrix and Zappa. Nice guitars, Hammond organ, violin (in the style of Family), a strong rhythm section, a jazzy brass section. It was one of the first rock albums released in France! Attention! This edition is based on the French vinyl from 1969, and NOT on the American compilation of the first two records - released in the same cover. Zoo's second album ("I Shall Be Free" from 1970) is excellent, jazzy, dynamic progressive rock with a British vocalist! I highly recommend both titles! (JL) -

Zoo's music is very dynamic playing based above all on the sound of wind instruments (saxophone, flute), nice Hammond organ parts and quite sharp guitar. Something in the style of Walrus, Hannibal, Colosseum and Chicago Transit Authority. The cover is the same as the one from the debut, which often causes confusion. A South Korean edition in a paper sleeve, from 2020. Highly recommended! (JL) -

A rare European CD limited to 500 copies, a 77-minute and truly excellent compilation of very rare or unique recordings by the band from its early, breakthrough (just before it won popularity) period - recorded between January and July 1971 (with Bill Bruford on drums and Tony Kaye on organ), during the tours promoting the albums "Time And The Word" and "The Yes Album". The record contains a unique and very interesting setlist, including a superb, improvised, 16-minute version of "America" from the repertoire of Simon & Garfunkel, the 11-minute "It's Love" by the American band The Rascals, known from the second record, fantastic and heavily altered versions of the progressive "Astral Traveller" and the absolutely brilliant "Everydays" from the repertoire of Buffalo Springfield and finally the extended "Yours Is No Disgrace" and "Perpetual Change", lasting 11 and 14 minutes respectively. The sound quality is perfect. In my opinion, alongside the classic "Yessongs", it is the best live Yes material I have ever heard! An absolute must! (JL) -

Japanese rock of the early 70s is one of the most interesting things I have heard, and Hiro Yanagida was probably the most important and most creative figure of that scene! Known from projects such as Apryl Fool, Foodbrain, Love Live Life + One and Shinki Chen And His Friends, the artist created very original, at times slightly crazy music inspired by works of classical music, the avant-garde, and above all British psychedelic/progressive rock. Like the debut LP "Milk Time", released in 1970, the album "Hiro Yanagida" (sometimes called "Nanasai No Rohjin Tengoku"), made in 1971, is genuinely very varied music (from heavy, thrilling rock all the way to classical-leaning miniatures) based as a rule on the sound of the Hammond organ and heavy, at times strongly overdriven guitar (the excellent Kimio Mizutani - I recommend his solo LP from 1971). This largely instrumental album is simply thrilling, although it goes down even better after several listens! Lovers of the first album will also be delighted with this album! A must! This is one of literally a few best rock records made in Japan in the early 70s! The debut of this Japanese keyboardist, released at the end of 1970 (recorded with, among others, members of Speed Glue & Shinki and Flied Egg), is genuinely very varied music (from heavy, thrilling rock to early fusion to classical-leaning, delicate miniatures) based as a rule on the sound of the Hammond organ, the virtuoso, melodic, yet warm sound of the violin and the heavy, at times strongly overdriven guitar of the excellent Kimio Mizutani (playing a little in the style of Can's guitarist), but there is also the sound of violin and even harpsichord. This entirely instrumental album (worth 1000-1200 dollars in the ultra-rare original on the Liberty label) is simply thrilling, although it goes down even better after several listens! And that splendid sleeve (with a copy of the original insert reproduced inside a gatefold booklet)... Great, clear sound - slightly better than on earlier editions! A must! Condition: New, sealed. A seven-disc box set from 2022, containing the albums recorded by the Japanese drummer and keyboardist for the Island label: "Floating Music" from 1972, "Man From The East" and "Freedom Is Frightening" from 1973, "One By One" from 1974 and "Raindog" from 1975, as well as the records sometimes credited as the group Go, the first of them as the trio Stomu Yamashta/Steve Winwood/Michael Shrieve - the studio "Go" and the live "Go... Live From Paris", both from 1976. Yamashta's music is very good, progressive, extended playing with distinct elements of jazz and should appeal to fans of such artists as Soft Machine, Nucleus, Can, Gong, Isotope or Gilgamesh, and even admirers of the first Skin Alley record. All the albums have been remastered, and the whole thing comes in a rigid box, with an attractive, 40-page booklet inside. Highly recommended! (MU) -

A new, limited, greatly expanded European edition of one of the earliest (alongside Phallus Dei by Amon Duul II) underground albums released in 1969 in Germany. The record, made by the Hansa label and dominated by long compositions of a rather dark character, was dominated by very lively, strongly psychedelic, improvised, jazzy, slightly Zappa-like, not devoid of ethnic influences, but kept 'in check', progressive music with dominant parts for saxophone, organ and guitars. In 1970 the band shortened its name to Xhol and recorded two very nice, but probably no longer so exciting, albums. To the contents of the original LP have been added 2 tracks from a rare single from 1969 and three excellent tracks, lasting 35 minutes together, recorded in 1970 for the legendary programme Beat-Club! Excellent-sounding edition, mastered from the original vinyl, of ONE of the TEN BEST LITTLE-KNOWN BRITISH PROGRESSIVE ALBUMS from the TURN OF THE 60s and 70s! That is no exaggeration! Released in January 1969, the formation's unfortunately only LP is an excellent combination of the then so invigorating mixture of late psychedelia and early, blues- and jazz-based prog rock, close to the output of Jethro Tull, very early Family, Spirit and Captain Beefheart. Nice flute and saxophone parts, jazzy guitar, a dreamy, psychedelic vocal and frenzied, very spacious, but solid sound of the rhythm section. A wonderful and at the same time still totally underrated record to this day (even by my fellow writer Richard Morton-Jack...). 56 minutes of intense and unforgettable experiences! This edition sounds much cleaner than the Sanctuary CD version, also taken from vinyl, and slightly better than the Free Records CD. In addition two mono versions from a very rare single. The drummer visible on the front of the sleeve later played in the progressive formation Whichwhat - also released by Flawed Gems. An absolute MUST! -

This is one of my most adored records from the so-called British second division. New, remastered, British edition of one of the best and most underrated formations of the early 70s!!! Founded by Glenn Cornick (ex-Jethro Tull), the band deserved much more than it achieved. On the debut, made at the beginning of 1972, the band presented an almost ideal combination of hard rock energy with a slightly folky sound and, above all, very tasty guitar parts, close to the style of Wishbone Ash of the LP Argus period. Attractive booklet. Recommended. -

The first time on CD (apart from a Japanese card sleeve release, and with decidedly better sound on top of that)! Unfortunately this excellent and varied album was the only work of this British band, which included one Steve Harris - the drummer of the brilliant Woody Kern the year before! As for the music itself, fans of Jethro Tull, Traffic, Family and the aforementioned Woody Kern will certainly be genuinely happy! To be honest, about half of the album sounds like a potential second LP by the latter band. Some of the tracks (e.g. 2 and 4) are real rock gems, and the rest is not far behind (well, perhaps except for the poor Vietnam Rose - written by former members of The Easybeats). I have known this record for over 10 years and have listened to it at least 50 times. It is an absolute must for all fans of rock from 1969-1970. Highly recommended! -

A great-sounding reissue with six rare bonus tracks! Released at the very beginning of 1970, the sole album by the Belgian Waterloo is wonderful, very atmospheric and at the same time hard-hitting music in the vein of Jethro Tull and Uriah Heep - all drizzled with the psychedelic sauce of the late 60s. Plenty of Hammonds, tons (1000 kg+) of flute, great compositions. The track 'Why May I Not Know?' is one of my most favourite recordings of all time! The original, mega-rare and much sought-after French edition on the Vogue label in great condition is worth 3900 euros! The CD has great sound! A MUST! (JL) -

The first record by this British band was released as a double vinyl (lasting nearly 80 minutes) and contained very eclectic, sophisticated music in the vein of King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Web and East Of Eden, that is, fairly complicated progressive playing (with long tracks) using brass and organ. The only drawback was the lack of guitar - listed in the line-up, but I cannot hear it... The next two albums were in a similar vein. Great sound quality. A must! -

Released in 1974, a very good debut album by a band playing classic, rather gentle (without instrumental acrobatics) but flawlessly delivered rock in the tradition of old Yes, Genesis, Fantasy, Asgard and Druid. The 14-minute "To The Urban Man" is a progressive masterpiece - with a building mood, Mellotron parts and a delicious guitar solo. It is an album that will delight all lovers of this kind of playing; besides, it was produced by Rick Wakeman! The second album, released in 1975, was filled by just 4 tracks - including a 19-minute, multi-threaded, instrumental suite. -

Originally, the 55-minute album (translated with the subtitle: "The Bible According To Vox Dei") appeared on double vinyl and is the second studio LP by this cult band - regarded as a milestone in the history of Argentine rock. It is worth knowing that, unlike in other South American countries, a huge number of excellent rock bands were exceptionally active in Argentina (reminiscent of the work of somewhat rawer progressive bands from Italy and Spain), which since the 90s have been highly valued by fans and collectors. So this is not an anomaly, but a rock classic! Great sound, although it should be remembered that parts of the penultimate, 10-minute track "Cristo" sound a little less clear, as they come from an average copy, because 2-3 minutes were accidentally... erased in the studio! Attention! This is the original version from the Disc Jockey label in the classic sleeve. Years later the material was re-recorded twice (in new sleeves), but that was decidedly not it... It is just a pity that there are no longer, instrumental improvised parts here - these unfortunately gave way to perfectly arranged, short songs, of course, as always, superbly performed and produced. -

"THE BEATMEN This beat band, formed in Bratislava in 1964, was the first group in Czechoslovakia to acquaint young people with the sound of The Beatles, and it must be admitted that it did so in a very professional way! The leader of The Beatmen was the then 18-year-old guitarist, singing in perfect English, Dežo Ursiny, and with him in the band appeared the 17-19-year-old Miroslav Bedrik - rhythm guitar and vocals, Marián Bednár - bass guitar and vocals, and Peter Petro - drums. After only a few performances at big events the band, looking almost like the idols from Liverpool, won recognition and the fairly widespread opinion of the best beat band in the country - ahead of Olympics and Synkopy 61. At the beginning of 1965 the band released a debut single Break It/Let's Make A Summer containing two original compositions - which was then unheard of! Unfortunately, the only quality that Ursiny's band lacked was the ability to compose very catchy melodies! Because although it must be admitted that both mid-tempo recordings sounded like thoroughbred, juicy Merseybeat from 1964, in England things were composed a little differently... The second Supraphon seven-inch: The Enchanted Lie/Safely Arrived also came out in 1965 and again contained two tracks that were on the one hand fairly dynamic and at times even youthfully shouted (though again played at a medium tempo), but on the other hand hard to hum and somehow... sad. Strangely, on several other recordings the band could play fast and with verve, so why did something hold them back on such important records? In the same year the Supraphon label divided these four songs into two A sides and two B sides and released them on the external market (Eastern Europe) as: Break It/The Enchanted Lie and Let´s Make A Summer/Safely Arrived. I think nobody noticed the difference. In 1966 the band went to Austria where it was made an 'offer it could not refuse', that is emigration. Dazzled and tempted by the possibility of conquering the West, the rhythm guitarist and bassist stayed, but the leader and (after a short time) the drummer returned to Czechoslovakia where Ursiny founded another, unfortunately short-lived Slovak legend - The Soulmen. The new musicians of The Beatmen became George Eperjessy and (probably German) drummer Arno Biller and in the new line-up the single Stand Up And Go/As You Love Me was made, released by the microscopic German label Intersound, now ultra-rare and worth 400 euros. The first side of the disc, decorated with a colour sleeve with a photo, was filled by a Beatles-like, though recalling a little the early Pretty Things, very rhythmic rock piece with a splendid, fast guitar solo quoting a very popular folk theme. On side B, on the other hand, was a psychedelic, slow number close to the style of the Byrds of the time! In my humble opinion, this was better and certainly more convincing playing than both of the Supraphon discs, genuinely adored in their home country, although I am sure that Czech beat lovers would certainly curse me for this opinion! In 2017 the label Indies Happy Trails released the CD The Beatmen Are Goin' On - Live In Bratislava 1965 containing two archival performances from October 1965, when the quartet performed before the group Manfred Mann."
