"Impressionist Symphony" (2014) is a project by Cyrille Verdeaux, creator known for his work under the Clearlight banner, which combines progressive rock with influences of classical music. The album was created as a concept inspired by impressionism and the work of composers such as Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. The material was recorded with the participation of many musicians from different countries, keyboard instruments, synthesisers and piano parts dominate here, supplemented by guitars and symphonic elements. The first anthology by an Italian band with a female vocalist in the style of Earth & Fire. The band now has cult status, but during its existence it had difficulty finding an audience, which may have stemmed from the English lyrics, and also from the fact that the Italian scene was dominated by keyboard-based music, while the basis of Circus 2000's work was the guitar. The set contains both albums, "Circus 2000" from 1970 and "An Escape From A Box" from 1972, as well as nine single tracks and two previously unreleased compositions that were to appear on the third album. The whole thing comes in a gatefold digipak, with an attractive booklet with many rare photos. Highly recommended! (MU) -

A European edition, remastered and extended by four tracks (from 1968), of the excellent and unfortunately only album, released in 1969, by a British progressive band led by the wind player Mel Collins - soon afterwards lured away from the band by Robert Fripp to King Crimson! Typically progressive playing with jazz influences and a few short ballads. The album contains, among other things, an absolutely stunning, almost heavy-rock, eight-minute version of "Norwegian Wood" by The Beatles and a brilliant rework of a jazz classic by Charles Mingus - one of my favourite progressive tracks 'ever'! This is the best-sounding CD version of this title! A must! -

C.C. is of course the keyboardist of Ten Years After! What a pity that Alvin Lee did not include Chick's compositions on TYA albums! I wrote about this genuinely charming album in the book "Brytyjski Rock" and although I gave it a fairly high rating then, I now like this progressive, elegant and genuinely 'catchy' record even more! The incredible line-up certainly did the music no harm - just look! Among others Martin Barre, Cozy Powell, Leo Lyons, Bernie Marsden and the vocalist of the group Wild Turkey, whom I like very much (appearing on almost all the tracks)! In fact it is to the output of WT (as well as Wishbone Ash and Procol Harum of the time) that Churchill's music harks back to the greatest degree. I assure you that the LP "You & Me", released in a rather unattractive cover, has no filler whatsoever! Certain shortcomings of the artwork are compensated for by the excellent, clean sound quality! A MUST! New, sealed. -

Hardback, 556 pages. A very good book (in a specially designed, attractive cover!) by a young music fan from Israel, who decided to describe 100 of his favourite, little-known artists/bands active in the years 1968-1976, from all over the world (most of them from the States), from the realm of fairly heavy psychedelic and progressive rock with folk and blues touches. In addition, by special order the author described 4 selected titles from Poland! The book contains black-and-white reproductions of most of the record sleeves, as well as concert adverts and rare clippings from the newspapers of the time (somewhat in the manner of the book 'Galactic Ramble'). So this is a perfect item for Megadisc customers, as this is exactly the kind of records we have been promoting and selling since 1991! Megadisc also has a certain stake in the making of this book, as some time ago I undertook the editorial supervision of this unique publication. A must! Happy reading! Jacek Leśniewski. P.S. Remastered edition, sounding and looking miles better (than the poor Radioactive label CD), of the only record, released in 1972, by a Canadian, French-speaking, progressive group strongly harking back to the style of King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator and Jethro Tull, that is, flute, saxophone, nice guitars and eclectic compositions. The French language is no hindrance at all, and the band itself could create the right mood, as in the 11-minute, psychedelic 'Nawiedzony zamek', or in the tracks full of progressive action at the end of the album. An album from 1982 which shows Caravan at a later, more orderly stage of their career – less "out there" now, but still clearly rooted in the atmosphere of the Canterbury scene. "Back to Front" sounds more accessible than the band's classic records, with a distinct turn towards melodic prog rock. Musically it is calmer, elegant and nostalgic material; it no longer has the improvisational freedom of the 70s, but you can still hear the lightness typical of the band and intelligent arrangements. Reissue of a brilliant (unreleased in its day) psych-progressive masterpiece with TWO MISSING TRACKS FROM THE SAME RECORDING SESSION, UNPUBLISHED ON CD (because thought lost)! One of these tracks had appeared earlier in a DEMO version on a withdrawn CD as a bonus and that version has been added as well! What a pity that this great, progressive (recorded at the end of 1968) material did not come out on vinyl - as was planned! The story of this album is in the text printed in the gatefold sleeve (CBS and Polydor wanted to release the record; the manager outbid and the matter fell through and the band broke up); in any case it is a classic on a par with the records of Andwella's Dream, Arcadium, Czar or Arzachel! In short it is a rock mass (four tracks lasting 9-10 minutes each and two of 5 minutes) of a mystical, but decidedly rock, progressive character (slightly oriental, lightly jazzy organ, flute, a solid, swinging rhythm section, at moments sharp guitars, little vocal) - somewhat resembling early Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues and The Nice - combined with Pink Floyd of 1968 and with a pinch of the Electric Prunes of the LP "Mass In F Minor". The sound is better than on most records. Oh, on one track on the record guitarist Steve Hackett guested (with great power!), and drums were played by David Dowle - later in Brian Auger & The Trinity and Whitesnake... I highly recommend this truly original record to all lovers of British playing of 1968-69 and at the same time assure you of 100% satisfaction! The sound quality is perfect - slightly better than on the previous CD! AN ABSOLUTE MUST! -

The set also includes, enriched with 10 bonus tracks, the only album by the cult, folk-progressive band Ora (from 1969), in which some of Byzantium played. Inside is a 32-page booklet. -

Practically every track sounded different, and fans of The Beatles will surely be interested in the nice, dynamic cover of 'Savoy Truffle', though it departs little from the original. Recommended! -

On CD for the first time! Second album by an excellent Dutch formation, earlier led by two later Focus musicians. How little known the LP "Parts", released in 1972 (by EMI Harvest), is can be shown by the fact that in the cult and much sought-after book "Scented Gardens Of The Mind" (devoted to the European progressive scene of the 70s) the author listed this catalogue record as... a compilation! So it is worth pointing out that it is completely brand new, rock, decidedly guitar-driven playing (with two ballads) close to the style of such groups as Wishbone Ash, the Dutch Cargo and Livin' Blues - with a touch of the then so popular Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Despite two weaker passages it is a really great, very varied record that will certainly satisfy 80-90% of fans of old playing! In addition several rare tracks from singles (not included among the bonus tracks to the debut) and a live number from the super rare, compilation (vinyl) soundtrack to the film 'Paradiso' (1971) are included. Highly recommended! -

"Released by Panton back in 1978, the LP Zrnko Písku was a classic of the jazz-fusion circle, distinguished by excellent, even virtuoso saxophone parts, impressive guitar playing, great drumming and, to put it mildly, rather peculiar vocal parts... The record opened with the 7-minute Chór Minulých Nohou V Průchodu "Pasáž", composed by Kubik - a strongly swinging, thoroughly convoluted piece built on a distinctive bass line and backed by a slightly hoarse vocal that, in my opinion, was a foreign body. The track took on colour in the 4th minute thanks to atmospheric keyboard parts and especially the saxophone, although Semelka sadly returned in the last minute. Then came the 6-and-a-half-minute Zátiší Peronních Lístků, written by the guitarist - a great, pleasantly catchy, again swaying piece, though not shy of full-blooded, rock dynamics, showing Pavlíček as a diligent and at the same time eloquent pupil of the John McLaughlin school - not to mention more delicious phrases from the saxophone... The first side closed with the balladic Sen O Snu composed by Semelka - a very slow, 6-minute number sung mainly to the accompaniment of piano and occasional impressive phrases from a classical guitar. The second, even better side of the record was taken up by just two compositions by Jan Kubik, the first of which was the Horké Letní Stmívání, lasting over 9 minutes - probably the best part of the album, which, apart from a convoluted and not very convincing Gentle Giant-style introduction (and a similar short ending), delighted with both the dynamic flute playing and almost oriental sax phrases against the backdrop of a distinctive but spacious-sounding rhythm section, and finally with almost Crimson-like, intense riffs from the saxophone and guitar... The album ended with the very restless (even Semelka woke from his lethargy and sounded like a rock vocalist) Milenci Před Pollockovým Obrazem - a 7-and-a-half-minute piece, full of intricacies and stylistic twists, which in the sixth minute rewards the patient listener with incredibly lively, improvised playing from the saxophonist and drummer - a passage that would fit perfectly on one of the early Van Der Graaf Generator albums. Sensational! Who knows whether in the second half of the 70s our southern neighbours didn't play the best progressive jazz-rock of all! And please, let nobody jump in here with SBB..." Blue Effect (later Modry Efekt) is probably the best Czech group - with the great, not to say frenzied, guitarist Radim Hladik. This outstanding, progressive album without a doubt belongs to the TOP FIVE OF ROCK FROM THE EASTERN BLOC! Recorded in 1969 and 1970, the vinyl "Kingdom Of Life" was prepared with a view to sale on the market of the Eastern Bloc countries. In fact it was the debut LP "Meditace" (1970), with the difference that four tracks from the first side originally sung in Czech (included among the bonus tracks - alongside 6 tracks from singles) were replaced with the English words of a new vocalist and an alternative cover. A combination of the style of Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Led Zeppelin and The Moody Blues. Why were such records not made here?!? This 80-minute CD includes all the recordings from the band's early psych-progressive period, which already in 1970 went off into slightly more jazzy, equally exciting regions. An absolute must! Still in September and October 1980 the eighth (or ninth - counting the largely repeat LP Kingdom Of Life) and unfortunately last LP under the name M. Efekt was recorded as a trio. The record, titled 33, was released by Supraphon in 1981 and contained four extended and as a rule very good compositions divided into two sides of vinyl: the first part came from Hladik's pen and side B was written by Semelka. A great virtue of this music was the very traditional, for 1981, rock sound, and the return of the dominant guitar sounds - strongly limited on the previous LP. It is also worth mentioning that Martin Kratochvil - piano, Jiří Stivín - flute and the band's former bassist - Josef Kůstka - vocals took part in the recording of the record. The whole thing was opened by the excellent, decidedly progressive Třiatřicet - lasting 14 and a half minutes, a fairly stylistically changeable piece sung with Niemen-like passion, but as I mentioned - dominated by splendid, dynamic and exceptionally solid phrases of electric guitar referencing the school of Howe's and Gilmour's. Of course the somewhat cosmic (and for brief moments almost new wave) resonating synthesisers tried to dominate this music, but Hladík did not give in! And Vlado Čech's drumming as always was sensational! I don't want to be nasty, but when I think of the level of rock playing in Poland at the time, I am seized by genuine envy! The second track was the 7-minute Avignonské Slečny Z Prahy - a piece begun very gently, almost pastorally, which then turned into another soft-progressive piece in the style of Focus and Camel. Opening the second part, the almost 9-minute Občasná Pánská Jízda, except for a few feisty and rhythmically broken, shorter passages, was as a rule kept in a fairly slow rhythm and thanks to the brilliant playing of Radim Hladík again brought to mind the classic recordings of Focus, Camel and Steve Hackett's. The closing piece of the last record, Kohoutek Kamarádství Dokapává, like its predecessor was based on an almost ideal interplay of warm-sounding synthesisers and sweeping guitar parts, of which the greatest impression was made by the slowly building, perfectly played and, importantly - melodic solo in the second half of the piece. Note! On the CD version the order of the last two recordings has been swapped - even if the booklet showed otherwise! And that was already the end of the record activity (not counting a few singles) of this splendid band - once more I will repeat that it was certainly the best, most versatile - that was active in the 70s in the Eastern Bloc! I admit that I somewhat underrated Hladík's band! I listened obsessively to 2-3 early titles and the rest I rather... did not give a fig about. And only now, when I have finished listening carefully to all these albums - only now has it dawned on me how excellent this music is and at how high and, importantly - consistently even a level it stood for many years! I understand that voices will soon be raised that there is, after all, Omega (I adore them, but after 1975 it was no longer the same...), that Breakout (great, but after 1971 strongly uneven and it stopped developing), that SBB (without a single excellent record in its output; totally overrated, adored mainly in Poland, though esteemed in the world) and perhaps the Romanian Phoenix (splendid, but their output was not very impressive...). Just to finish I will add that in 1981 the band broke up, because the vocalist and the drummer Čech, always faithful to Hladík, left to found the group Lešek Semelka & S.L.S. Meanwhile in later years the lone guitarist was practically condemned to work with various, random line-ups, and the result of these efforts was a Supraphon disc made in 1983: Něžná/Záhada Jmelí (1983) - with a ballad-like and completely nondescript A side and a decent, hard rock B side. And in 1987 the Doktor/Čajovna (Supraphon, 1987), unknown to me, reached the market. Unfortunately, already in 1986 the excellent drummer (compared in his homeland to John Bonham) Vlado Čech died prematurely of alcoholism..." A chunk of excellent music! The box does not contain the export LP "Kingdom Of Life" (1971) - released separately in Italy. Highly recommended! -

I love this album! Released 'only' in 1979, but sounding much earlier (1973-74), the Spaniards' second album contained a very impressive and soulful portion of progressive rock based on a strong vocal, sobbing or heavily riff-driven guitar parts and of course a battery of keyboards - almost identical in form to the offerings of some Italian formations such as Biglietto per l'Inferno, P.F.M. or Museo Rosenbach - with a touch of the style of Pink Floyd and early Camel. I stress that Spanish progressive bands were heavily 'delayed' (including Lisker, Nu, Leno) and the date 1979 can safely be treated as nominal. I write this because at that time rather dreadful things were being made in the progressive world, but in General Franco's country time flowed differently, more slowly. As with all records from this label - excellent sound quality, mastered from the original vinyl! A must! -

"Lord Of Misrule" is an album from 2017 on which Blood Ceremony develop their characteristic sound inspired by the rock of the 70s. The band's music combines heavy, doomy riffs with psychedelia and a distinctly marked occult atmosphere. A special role is played here by the flute, which gives the compositions a unique, almost folk flavour. The production is warmer and more accessible than on earlier releases, but does not lose its dark atmosphere. Superb, limited to 500 copies, wonderfully recorded, 80-minute CD containing all the very good quality recordings available on the market made for BBC radio (by the excellent, British, progressive formation led by Jethro Tull's first guitarist) in 1969-1974. On the tracks from the 1974 reunion (including a 30-minute, excellent live performance for a small audience) the drummer was Clive Bunker, known from Jethro Tull! ATTENTION! 10 brand new compositions (6 from 1974) did not appear on records, so one could almost say that a third, unrecorded album is contained here: live/studio from 1974! On two tracks by the group Blodwyn, Peter Banks, known from early Yes, played guitar! This CD beats hands down the long out-of-print (and on closer inspection somewhat deceptive, since it contains several tracks from the 90s) CD 'Basement Tapes'. That is a completely different conversation! Great sound quality - the two recordings available on YouTube are of worse quality than on the CD! A MUST! (JL) -

Released by Polydor Records in December 1971, a classic and in my opinion excellent album by a Danish progressive band with a full sound based on Hammond organ and juicy guitar sounds, complemented by flute parts and a strong rhythm section. The band as a rule went for compact forms and catchy melodies, though it often switched surprisingly abruptly (changing tempo in passing) between acoustic passages and heavier, organ-and-guitar improvisations. An example is the great overdriven guitar solo coming in suddenly in the first track... The exceptions to the rule were 2 short passages based on a soporific piano backing and a mournful vocal part. Although inspirations from British bands such as Jethro Tull (please listen to the splendid second track), Atomic Rooster, Traffic or Caravan were clearly audible, Blast Furnace's music nevertheless retained its own character. Unfortunately, the album was not a commercial success (the original vinyl in perfect condition sells for 1000 euros), but over time gained the status of one of the most interesting and most sought-after Danish progressive albums of the early seventies. After the band's break-up, two of its musicians joined the band Culpeper's Orchard. Additionally, the A-side of a rare single from 1971 is included as a bonus. All the tracks are instrumental and have unhurried tempos, and the album is often classed in the ambient style. The Esoteric edition includes three bonus tracks, one recorded in 1976 at the Chateau d'Herouville studio in France and released on a single under the pseudonym Saratoga Space Messengers and two from a Spanish single released in 1978.
