MECKI MARK MEN - MECKI MARK MEN - Marathon +6 - FRA Lumpy Gravy Remastered Expanded Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
The Swedes' third album was recorded in 1970, but not released until 1971, on Sonet Records. The album is fairly varied, though on most tracks the band continues along the route set out on the second album - still very psychedelic, with its head in space, but at moments much heavier than before. In addition two great, improvised tracks from a concert and the second part of the Swedish mix of the second album. Highly recommended! (JL) -

MECKI MARK MEN - MECKI MARK MEN - Running In The Summer Night +5 - FRA Lumpy Gravy Remastered Expanded Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
Please do not be put off by the rustic cover! This album, recorded in Stockholm in 1969 and released only in the States in 1970, is heavy, strongly narcotic (but without clowning), psychedelic, at moments progressive rock from Sweden - of a very high shelf! This time the leader, playing Hammonds and singing in the manner of Hendrix, took on three former musicians of the excellent, psychedelic group Baby Grandmothers and the result was a genuinely great album - harking back to the style of Pink Floyd, Iron Butterfly, Hendrix, The Doors, Cream and very early Soft Machine. The record contains, among others, two longer, 8-10 minute mini-suites. For the first time on CD the American mix, released only on vinyl in 1970, is used. The previous CD edition (in a digipak) contained the unreleased Swedish mix and just two tracks from the USA. Now the Swedish mix has been split in half between the second and third albums. A must! MECKI MARK MEN - MECKI MARK MEN - Mecki Mark Men +4 - FRA Lumpy Gravy Remastered Expanded Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
Released at the end of 1967, the cult debut album by the legendary Swedish psychedelic formation, modelled on the early Jimi Hendrix Experience (especially the vocal) and The Doors - with a pinch of The Mothers Of Invention. It is dark, psychedelic rock (with distant echoes of rhythm'n'blues) of the top shelf - surprisingly up to date at the time, and even ahead of American or British trends by several months. All three Mecki Mark Men albums are excellent, though they require a few listens! A must! (JL) -

MEDIUM - MEDIUM - Medium - SWE Flawed Gems Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
On CD for the first time! Released in 1969, the only album by this psychedelic Canadian formation belongs to the circle of collectable vinyl rarities (it is, among others, in Hans Pokora's book). The Medium played inventive, very polished and at the same time very atmospheric music, close to the style of The Doors, Vanilla Fudge, Iron Butterfly and the little-known C.A. Quintet - that is, lots of organ parts and sharply overdriven (at moments even jazzy) guitar. Highly recommended! -

MIGHTY BABY (see also: Action / Habibiyya) - MIGHTY BABY - Mighty Baby +5 - UK Big Beat Expanded Edition - LISTENprice: 80,00 PLN / 20,00 EUR
An excellent and absolutely classic debut by a legend of the British underground - descended from the group The Action, adored in the British Isles. Made in 1969, the album was a combination of guitar-driven psychedelic rock of the early Quicksilver kind with early raw prog rock of the Quintessence and East Of Eden kind (saxophone, flute, elements of oriental music). Alongside the delicate moods there is plenty of dense, improvised playing here! This album genuinely deserves to be rediscovered! Additionally five fantastic recordings made in 1968 (still under the name Action), but released only in 1985 on a mini LP. A must! (JL) -

MISTY - MISTY - Here Again +4 - UK Grapefruit Expanded Digipack Edition - LISTENprice: 70,00 PLN / 17,50 EUR
The first (ever!) release of a very good album, recorded in 1969, by a British progressive band echoing the style of Procol Harum, Cressida and late The Beatles. Released in 1970 by EMI Parlophone, the collectable single "Hot Cinnamon/Cascades" was a commercial failure, so the label gave up on releasing the finished and fully mixed long-player. The sound quality is perfect! The CD additionally contains four live tracks, recorded for British TV in 1970. A must! (JL) -

MOPS - MOPS - Iijanaika - SWE Flawed Gems Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
The Japanese band The Mops is remembered mainly for the legendary album "Psychedelic Sound In Japan" (1968), as well as the great track "I'm Just A Mops" - included on the superb four-disc box set "Nuggets II". However, fans of heavy playing must absolutely take an interest in the third LP in the discography, "Iijanaika" (May 1971) - 80% in the heavy rock style known from the superb records of the groups Blues Creation, Flower Travellin' Band, Speed Glue & Shinki and Strawberry Path. In my opinion the first 30 seconds of this album are the absolute peak of heavy rock of the 70s and only the Japanese could have played like that! I admit that those first sounds simply killed me! This record, sung in English, also contains two short ballads and one blues joke, but the remaining 30 minutes of pure rock should satisfy even the most fastidious lovers of playing 'not only Anglo-Saxon'. A MUST! (JL) -

MORGEN - MORGEN - Morgen (3CD) - US Now-Again Remastered Expanded Edition - LISTENprice: 140,00 PLN / 35,00 EUR
Released in 1969, a superb psychedelic album with a heavy guitar sound and great, catchy compositions. One of the 2-3 most underrated American records of the late 60s. MOTOWNS - MOTOWNS - Motowns - ITA Remastered Card Sleeve Edition - LISTENprice: 75,00 PLN / 18,75 EUR
ATTENTION! In many publications and websites Italy is given as this band's country of origin. The truth, however, is that it was a British band from Liverpool, permanently resident in Italy. It was there that the formation's only album came out (on the small label Cinevox), combining psychedelic rock of the 60s with early progressive rock. It is not a masterpiece in this field, but the record can definitely appeal... The record completely vanished in its day, because in 1971 practically nobody played like that any more - the whole thing sounds more like 1967 - yet all in all it is a very successful album. Remastered 2009 reissue, in a single sleeve. -

MOVE (see also: Electric Light Orchestra / Idle Race / Wizzard) - MOVE - Move +52 (1st Album + Rare Tracks) (3CD) - UK Esoteric Remastered Expanded Digipack - LISTENprice: 130,00 PLN / 32,50 EUR
A remastered triple Esoteric edition (in a rigid, laminated box), expanded by two discs, of the great debut album by one of the ten BEST British bands of the late 60s (I am not exaggerating!) and at the same time still very underrated among less initiated listeners! The debut was a mixture of catchy, ambitious pop, psychedelic rock and ballad. The second disc adds a stereo mix unreleased at the time, plenty of bonus tracks from the hit singles and alternative versions. The third (perhaps the best) disc, meanwhile, features sensational sessions made for BBC radio - including many covers from the repertoire of other bands, such as Love or The Byrds! The next two records (Shazam and Looking On - both from 1970) were even better! An absolute must! -

NEOTON (see also: Omega) - NEOTON - Bolond Varos +11 - ITA Eastern Time Expanded Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
Released at the end of 1970, the only album by a very good Hungarian formation playing late, psychedelic rock with organ in the style of the catchy Procol Harum and Omega of the second and third record period, though slightly gentler. In 1971 drummer Ferenc Debreceni moved to Omega. To this very rare and surprisingly little-known record eleven nice tracks from singles, from 1968-1971, have been added. A few years later one of the musicians founded the dreadful Neoton Familia, but Neoton is a completely different story! The sound quality beats the old, clumsy Hungaroton 1992 edition hands down. Highly recommended! -

NEW COLONY SIX - NEW COLONY SIX - Treat Her Groovy - UK El Records Edition - LISTENprice: 70,00 PLN / 17,50 EUR

CD
NEW TROLLS - NEW TROLLS - New Trolls (2nd Album) - ITA Card Sleeve Edition - LISTENprice: 75,00 PLN / 18,75 EUR
Very good second album by the future classics of Italian progressive rock. On this record, released in 1970, the band offered a mixture of heavy, psychedelic rock and ambitious pop. The whole resembles the first Le Orme album, the early recordings of the Hungarian Omega, as well as Vanilla Fudge, Gods and Deep Purple of the debut period! All in all it is a somewhat underrated record that is a real pleasure to listen to! Release in a single paper sleeve. Highly recommended. -

NUCLEUS (CAN) (see also: A Foot In Coldwater) - NUCLEUS - Nucleus - US Mandala Digipack Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
The only, but genuinely excellent, album by a somewhat forgotten Canadian formation, which two years later turned into the hard rock A Foot In Coldwater. Heavy, intense playing with dominant Hammond sounds and a wonderfully overdriven (but not overdone) guitar; besides that, plenty of intense, meaty and almost progressive playing - as it was in 1969... Something like a Vanilla Fudge three times better and more rock-oriented, and without the intrusive vocals. 44 minutes and only six tracks! Digipak. A must! -

OLYMPIC - OLYMPIC - Jedeme, jedeme +8 - CZE Supraphon Remastered Expanded Digipack Edition - LISTENprice: 90,00 PLN / 22,50 EUR
"Still in September 1970, in just three days, the band recorded all the material for its third and last classic album titled Jedeme, Jedeme, although the number 3 also appeared on the cover. Released in a gatefold sleeve, the record showed the band as artists fascinated above all by the work of the late The Beatles, and also showed a palpable fascination with the then very popular and fashionable progressive rock. It is worth mentioning that several compositions were created as early as 1969 - during a French escapade. The whole thing opened with the sounds of a locomotive setting off, that is the 5-and-a-half-minute Pět Cestujících - a decidedly rock, slightly swaying piece recalling a little the influences of Ten Years After, Traffic and (gentle) Jimi Hendrix, thanks to the interplay of piano, organ and slightly jazzy guitar. Unfortunately, the one that followed, Když Jsem Bejval Tramp, was admittedly a likeable, but on a rock record rather superfluous piece harking back to the Dixieland era. Good that it is only 2 minutes... Third on the record, the balladic Mr. Den A Lady Noc, sung in a warm voice, could have appeared on a Cat Stevens album of that time, but the surprisingly rock, Beatles-like ending could not! The next on the record, the excellent Brouk, was a mixture of the rock sounds of the Beatles, the melodies of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and a good pinch of Jethro Tull that looks rather improbable on paper - also thanks to the charming flute part by Jiří Stivín (of Jazz Q Praha)! That is exactly how catchy, ambitious, British rock sounded in the autumn of 1970! A revelation! The first part was closed by the as much as 6-minute Danny - quite a pretty, ballad-rock, majestic and gently progressive piece (with another attractive part by Stivín - this time as a saxophonist) recalling some recordings of Procol Harum and The Beatles and right at the end almost quoting Donovan's Atlantis, sung by Janda literally personifying McCartney! The second side opened with the gently psychedelic, melodic Elixír - another strongly McCartney-like, rock piece that would have gained still more without the a cappella ending. Built on the sound of organ and electric guitar, the slightly swaying Bláznivej Kiki was a likeable, at moments slightly jazzy, progressive piece, and after it came Bon Soir Mademoiselle Paris, sung in Czech with a slight French mannerism - a beautiful, melancholic piece sung by Janda accompanied by charmingly mixed parts for flute, accordion, acoustic guitar and violin. The penultimate track on the second side, the cheerful and catchy Strážce Majáku, was another track on Jedeme, Jedeme proving that The Beatles' albums of 1968-1969 (and the single Hey Jude) must have been played to death by the main composer Petr Janda. The whole thing was closed by the 5-minute Tobogán - a slightly swaying, dense, almost hard-rock number that draws attention with excellent drumming and aggressive vocals." OLYMPIC - OLYMPIC - Zelva +11 - CZE Supraphon Remastered Expanded Edition - LISTENprice: 90,00 PLN / 22,50 EUR
"During the same, October session the band recorded several quite modern-sounding recordings which, alongside the tracks captured on tape in early spring, ended up on the debut album Želva, released as early as 1968 - at the same time the first Czech longplay of rock music in history! On this record, released in mono and in stereo and at the same time excellently produced, the band offered a very attractive and non-trivial mixture, composed for the most part by the duo Janda/Chrastina, of mid-60s British freakbeat close to The Beatles and The Yardbirds; white rhythm'n'blues in the style of The Rolling Stones and Them; and the then increasingly popular and practically unheard-of in the Eastern Bloc countries early psychedelia of the The Byrds, The Doors and The Who kind. The 35-minute album opened with Želva, previously released on a single - a lively number with harmonica, based on a strong, slightly broken rhythm, decidedly drawing on early Them - Van Morrison. A classic! Second came Vzpomínka Plíživá, based on the interplay of guitars and organ - a piece created during the October session, harking back a little to the psychedelic The Byrds, but still evoking echoes of early The Animals. The bawdy Línej Skaut that followed, which sounded as if it had come out of a good drinking session, brought to mind the mood of 'The Good Soldier Švejk', but I confess that I could live without this, in sum Dylan-like number, recorded with the help of an accordion, a trombone and simple strokes of a bass drum... Then the band offered two charming rock ballads: the decidedly Beatles-like Dám Zejtra Zas Flám, sounding almost like an outtake from the album Help! and Modravé Mámení, strongly resembling The Byrds (and I Got You Babe by the duo Sonny & Cher) and garnished with nice drumming by the evidently gifted Jan 'Sorry' Pacák and the pleasant sound of a ringing guitar, nicely overdriven during the solo. The first side was closed by the decent Nikdo Neotvírá - a cheerful piece, though contributing little to the whole, inspired by I Feel Fine by The Beatles. The second part opened with the decidedly Stones-like Nebezpečná Postava, played at an unusually fast rhythm, though too light for me, after which came the very successful, balladic Snad Jsem To Zavinil Já, released earlier on the A-side of a single - a catchy guitar piece sung by Janda in a delicate voice, at moments recalling The House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals and right at the end also evoking For Your Love by The Yardbirds. There is nothing to be ashamed of in good role models! Dědečkův Duch, recorded in February 1967 and sung with great ease, was a much-needed dose of dynamic and catchy pop-rock garnished with neat entries of sharp guitar. By contrast, the slightly swaying, excellent Jen Bůh Ví, sung in a sleepy voice by the bassist Pavel Chrastina, was a pleasant but at the same time majestic, almost psychedelic ballad, and right after it appeared the under-2-minute Telefon - a rhythm'n'blues number played at a very fast tempo, with harmonica and a nice part for twangy guitar. The record was closed in great style by the 6-minute-20-second, genuinely legendary Psychiatrický Prášek - a superb, decidedly psychedelic rock track that is a peculiar blend of She's Not There by The Zombies, I'm Going Home by The Rolling Stones and The End by The Doors - and what is more garnished with haunted vocals straight from the titular psychiatric ward! It is only a pity that the band did not play for 2-3 minutes longer... It must be admitted that the LP Želva can be listened to almost in one breath and I am really full of admiration that our southern neighbours were able to produce such an innovative, invigorating and at the same time melody-rich (though sometimes borrowed) record! At that time the rest of Eastern European rock was still gazing solely at The Beatles, The Animals or, worse still, at soul music... It is worth knowing that only about 5000 copies appeared in the artistic cover with the titular tortoise (by the drummer), and since the lead times at the monopoly printing house were long and booked up, subsequent pressings of the record appeared either in hastily made, unattractive sleeves, or in covers with a large Supraphon logo on the front and with the track titles and an editorial note on the back. After 1970, however, the album was no longer reissued at all and today it is a great rarity, though practically never seen in great condition. Records in 'EX/EX' condition are worth over 150 euros, while 'Near Mint' copies in the tortoise cover can easily fetch prices of 250-300 euros! I confess that I never had trouble getting hold of the band's albums, since quite by chance the first three Olympic titles (in almost perfect condition) were brought to my shop in the mid-90s by a Czech tourist (crammed into a huge backpack), who exchanged them with undisguised joy for CDs that interested him..." A REVIEW BY JACEK LEŚNIEWSKI FROM A BOOK ON ROCK IN THE FORMER EASTERN BLOC, BEGUN BUT ABANDONED AFTER HALF A YEAR (2021). A remastered reissue in a digipak, extended by 11 tracks, from 2019.
