ANALOGUE SOUND! A very rare (because poorly selling), first and only German Geffen 1988 edition, of the album by a short-lived band made up of old progressive veterans: Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer and the young vocalist/bassist Robert Berry. It is progressive pop rock with one really nice, serious track, the 7-minute "Desde La Vida". ELP fans must have this album, while the rest should certainly listen to it first. This British band plays, sounds and looks as if it had been plucked straight from 1970-73! The sensational debut album combines the best of heavy rock from 40 years ago: the heaviness of Black Sabbath, the raw sound of MC5 and Blue Cheer, the finesse of Cream and Led Zeppelin and the untamed energy of the Budgie debut... Yes indeed, this material, recorded as a trio, is probably most reminiscent of the first album by the Welshmen. The whole thing sounds as if the musicians had simply walked into the studio, grabbed their instruments and recorded everything in one go! A great record, though the rather raw vocal may not appeal to everyone... Definitely recommended. (K) -

A must! -

A wonderful, 12-minute version of "All Along The Watchtower" and several other gems, such as "Night Flight" or "Three Sisters". Without a doubt one of the best albums ever released by the Vertigo label! The additional CDs contain recordings by the jazz-standards-performing band US Jazz Trio, whose line-up included the keyboard player Lynton Naiff and the drummer Mo Foster (CD3), live material recorded without the (ill) vocalist in 1969 (CD2) and recordings for an unmade second album, already with Vivienne McAuliffe, the vocalist of the band Principal Edward's Magic Theatre, in place of Hoyle (CD4). Debut and surprisingly successful album, released privately in 1978, by a British progressive formation playing a classic variety of symphonic rock (Hammond organ, moog) in the vein of ELP, Yes, Genesis, Flash and Druid. The band was formed in 1971, hence all six compositions have a fairly original form. After a change of line-up, the next records sounded decidedly new wave and are better avoided. The great debut, however - by all means! -

Age Of Taurus is yet another young doom metal (or, if you prefer, stoner rock) British formation playing heavy rock inspired above all by the work of old Black Sabbath, though the music on this CD could also be compared with the work of Hammers Of Misfortune (especially from the period of the second album). It must be admitted that this kind of playing (though not very original) definitely holds its own, especially as both the band's playing and the compositions themselves are at a really good level. If someone likes old, heavy "Sabbath-style" playing, there is simply no way that the music on this album would not appeal to them... Recommended (K). -

THE TITLE IS OUT OF PRINT! LAST COPIES! Classic British hard rock in the vein of Bedlam, Budgie, Stray and Dirty Tricks. An English trio playing heavy, invigorating rock with influences of blues and boogie, decidedly favouring the classic, 'old' sound of the early 70s, quite rarely encountered in 1975... A great-sounding reissue made in the original British cover. The German version from 1976 (and the early CD) had photos of the musicians on a dark background. Additionally one track from the B-side of a 1975 single has been included. Professionally recorded, but privately released by the band, the vinyl original is worth over 500 euros, so it is certainly worth investing 5% of that amount! Condition: new, sealed. A must! (JL) -

The Alan Bown is one of the most underrated bands of the turn of the 60s and 70s. While the studio records (apart from the brilliant 1968 debut) are a little uneven, the radio sessions for the BBC show the band as one of the best on the British scene of the time! The first side of this limited, 58-minute LP is filled with original, psychedelic, melodic compositions (sometimes lighter, sometimes heavier...) played with the participation of an exquisite brass section. I draw particular attention to the sophisticated arrangement in "All Along The Watchtower" (it is precisely this version that inspired Hendrix!), and the heavy, guitar-riff-driven "Penny For Your Thoughts". In truth it is hard to single out one track or another here, because all the recordings are simply exquisite! In addition, it is worth noting the excellent vocalist Jess Roden - later in Bronco and (with Robbie Krieger and John Densmore of The Doors) in The Butts Band! In 1969 Roden was replaced by the quite good Robert Palmer (a huge pop star in the 80s), and then came Gordon Neville, sounding almost identical to RP. So the second side of the album was filled with rock of a more progressive (at times folk) flavour, and the last two tracks are a real treat for fans of playing in the vein of Colosseum or Mogul Thrash! All the recordings sound ideal! A must! NEW, SEALED. -

Remastered (the old See For Miles edition had distorted and slightly 'wobbly' sound) and considerably expanded Swedish edition of the excellent debut album by the British formation The Alan Bown! (with an exclamation mark). This album, released at the end of 1968 by the label Music Factory, unfortunately somewhat forgotten today, certainly belongs among the best achievements of British psychedelic rock! Seriously! This excellent and criminally underrated record contains twelve unconventional, psychedelic, melodic compositions (sometimes lighter, sometimes heavier...) in a fairly "fairy-tale" mood - with the addition of a brass section. Particularly striking are the sophisticated arrangements and catchy melodies. I especially recommend the originally arranged cover of "All Along The Watchtower" (it was this very version that inspired Hendrix!), the decidedly pop-psychedelic "Toyland", and the heavy, guitar-riff-based "Penny For Your Thoughts" or the dynamic "My Girl The Month Of May". In fact it is hard to single out this or that track, because all the recordings are simply superb! In addition, it is worth paying attention to the excellent vocalist Jess Roden - later in Bronco and the Butts Band! Besides this, as many as fourteen bonus tracks are included here, among them 10 ultra-rare recordings made for the BBC! An absolute must!!! (JL) -

Released in 1969 in 80 copies, this very subtle, fairy-tale album resembled the work of very early Pink Floyd, Donovan or The Moody Blues and combined elements of British folk and light psychedelia. In addition, the recording used backwards tapes, processed vocals and excerpts from the stage play. Plus 11 previously unreleased minutes. Highly recommended! (JL) -
