OLYMPIC - OLYMPIC - Zelva - CZE Supraphon Remastered Press - LISTENprice: 120,00 PLN / 30,00 EUR
"At the same October session the band recorded several rather modern-sounding tracks which, alongside the pieces committed to tape in early spring, ended up on the debut album Želva, released in 1968 - at the same time the first Czech long-player of rock music in history! On this record, released in mono and in stereo and at the same time excellently produced, the band offered, composed for the most part by the duo Janda/Chrastina, a very attractive and non-trivial mixture of British freakbeat from the mid-60s close to The Beatles and The Yardbirds; white rhythm'n'blues in the style of The Rolling Stones and Them and the then ever more popular and practically unheard of in the Eastern Bloc countries early psychedelia in the vein of The Byrds, The Doors and The Who. The 35-minute album opened with Želva, released earlier on a single - a lively number with harmonica, based on a strong, somewhat broken rhythm, decidedly drawing on early Them - Van Morrison. A classic! Second came Vzpomínka Plíživá, based on the interplay of guitars and organ - a piece created during the October session alluding a little to the psychedelic Byrds, but still evoking echoes of the early Animals. The following bawdy Línej Skaut, as if created during a decent drinking session, brought to mind the mood of 'The Good Soldier Švejk', but I confess I could live without this, in all, Dylan-esque number, recorded with the help of an accordion, trombone and simple strikes of the bass drum... Then the band offered two charming, rock ballads: the decidedly Beatles-like Dám Zejtra Zas Flám, sounding almost like an outtake from the album Help!, and Modravé Mámení, strongly reminiscent of The Byrds (and of I Got You Babe by the duo Sonny & Cher) and garnished with nice drumming from the evidently gifted Jan 'Sorry' Pacák and the pleasant sound of a ringing guitar, nicely overdriven during the solo. The first side was closed by the decent Nikdo Neotvírá - a cheerful piece, though adding little to the whole, inspired by I Feel Fine by The Beatles. The second part opened with the decidedly Stones-like Nebezpečná Postava, played at a rather unusually fast rhythm, though too light for me, after which came the very successful, balladic Snad Jsem To Zavinil Já, released earlier on the A-side of a single - a catchy, guitar-driven piece sung by Janda in a gentle voice, at moments reminiscent of The House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals and right at the end also evoking For Your Love by The Yardbirds. There is no need to be ashamed of good models! Recorded in February 1967 and sung in a very relaxed manner, Dědečkův Duch was a much-needed dose of dynamic and catchy pop-rock garnished with neat entries of sharp guitar. By contrast the dreamily sung by the bassist Pavel Chrastina, gently swaying, excellent Jen Bůh Ví was a pleasant, yet at the same time majestic, almost psychedelic ballad, and right after it came Telefon, lasting less than 2 minutes - a rhythm'n'blues number with harmonica and a nice part of jangling guitar, played at a very fast tempo. The record was closed in great style by the genuinely legendary Psychiatrický Prášek, lasting 6 minutes and 20 seconds - a superb, decidedly psychedelic, rock piece, a peculiar melange of She's Not There by The Zombies, I'm Going Home by The Rolling Stones and The End by The Doors - garnished, on top of that, with haunted vocals straight from the titular psychiatric ward! It is only a pity the band did not play for 2-3 minutes longer... It has to be admitted that the LP Želva is listened to almost in one breath and I am truly full of admiration that our southern neighbours were able to produce such an innovative, refreshing and at the same time full of attractive (though sometimes borrowed) melodies, record! At that time the rest of rock Eastern Europe was still staring solely at The Beatles, The Animals or, worse still, at soul music... It is worth knowing that only about 5000 copies came out in the artistic sleeve with the titular tortoise (by the drummer), and since the deadlines at the monopolistic printing house were long and busy, subsequent pressings of the record came out either in hastily made, unattractive sleeves, or in sleeves with the large Supraphon logo on the front and with the track titles and an editorial note on the back. After 1970, meanwhile, the album ceased to be reissued at all and today it is a great rarity, though practically never seen in great condition. Records in 'EX/EX' condition are worth over 150 euros, while 'Near Mint' copies in the tortoise sleeve can easily fetch prices of 250-300 euros! I confess I never had a problem getting hold of the band's albums, because quite by chance in the mid-90s a Czech tourist brought the first three Olympic titles (in almost perfect condition) to my shop (stuffed into a huge backpack) and with undisguised joy exchanged them for CDs that interested him..." A REVIEW BY JACEK LEŚNIEWSKI FROM A BOOK ABOUT ROCK IN THE FORMER EASTERN BLOC, BEGUN BUT ABANDONED HALF A YEAR LATER (2021). 2013 remastered reissue, sealed. -

OMEGA (HUN) (see also: Locomotiv GT / Neoton) - OMEGA - Omega Red Star From Hungary - UK 1968 Decca Album - AUT Edition - VERY RARE - LISTENprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
Not counting the unofficial Hungarian CD released a few years ago by a 'pseudo-Universal' (and which is even mentioned on progarchives.com), this is the CD debut of a very good, though completely forgotten, second album by Omega, recorded by the band during their stay in London (May 1968) and released exclusively by British Decca. That is also why on the back of the sleeve of the vinyl edition of the LP 10 000 Lepes, released a year later, there was the mark: "No. 3"! This material, sung in English (with one exception), was a cross between the debut LP Trombitas Fredi and the already mentioned, genuinely excellent LP 10 000 Lepes, that is, a combination of psychedelic rock, budding prog rock, pop and folk with a dominant organ sound, catchy melodies and timid studio experiments with sound. If only the track Trumpeter Charlie (that is, the unfortunate, vaudeville Trombitas Fredi from the debut) were missing, the record would have gained even more class. In any case, it is a charming album that grows on you more with each listen. Oh, and on the record all the tracks were sung by the organist Gabor Presser, because Janos Kobor had to sit some exams in Hungary... It may be worth knowing that the original Decca Records vinyl, sold in only a few hundred copies, is worth 400 euros today (in perfect condition)! The CD sounds excellent - very spacious and clean! A must! -

OMEGA (HUN) (see also: Locomotiv GT / Neoton) - OMEGA - Trombitas Fredi +7 - HUN Remastered Expanded - LISTENprice: 85,00 PLN / 21,25 EUR
A debut album from 1968! Fans of progressive rock rather do not like this album, but lovers of psychedelia and early folk-rock will adore this record! After getting through the first, rather tragic, vaudeville track, catchy, somewhat Beatles-like music is revealed, with a nice, processed guitar - in no way inferior to most European productions of the time! 7 bonuses. Highly recommended! -

OUTSIDERS - OUTSIDERS - CQ - EU Music On Vinyl YELLOW VINYL Limited Pressprice: 160,00 PLN / 40,00 EUR
This third album by the Dutch band, released in 1968, in my humble opinion belongs to the very top of psychedelic rock, and is certainly one of the most outstanding achievements of its kind from continental Europe! The record is filled with thirteen very "British" tracks, probably closest to the style of the Pretty Things' "SF Sorrow", but you can also hear the influence of the Zombies from the period of the LP "Odessey And Oracle" and of the psychedelic Kinks! Of course there is no question of any cheap copying or duplicating of others' ideas! The Outsiders played entirely their own music, and certain similarities and comparisons are simply unavoidable. Either way this is a decidedly brilliant record, which will delight all fans of exquisite psychedelic rock from the late sixties! Truly nobody will be disappointed! A reissue on yellow vinyl, from 2025. -

PINK FLOYD - PINK FLOYD - A Saucerful Of Secrets - EU Remastered Card Sleeve Editionprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
A remastered edition of the brilliant, second, decidedly psychedelic album by the band, containing, among others, "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun", "Let There Be More Light" and the 12-minute title track. Syd Barrett still appeared on three tracks. 2016 edition, in a gatefold paper sleeve. -
CD
PINK FLOYD - PINK FLOYD - BBC Sessions (May 1967-December 1968) - SPA Top Gear Edition - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
This limited, fan-club CD (released in a run of 500 copies) contains all the existing/surviving recordings made for BBC radio and TV between spring 1967 and autumn 1968. The first fourteen tracks are the line-up with Syd Barrett, while in the remaining fourteen David Gilmour already appears. Please note that several pieces never appeared on catalogue records, though in a few cases only the titles were changed... The quality is very good or ideal - certainly better than on old bootleg CDs (better recordings have been found among fans), although some tracks hiss, or are a little dull and will not get any better. This is a great treat for fans of old psychedelic rock! A MUST! (JL) -
CD
PINK FLOYD - PINK FLOYD - On Tour 1968 (Rome, May 1968 + Utrecht, May 1968 + Los Angeles, July 1968) - SPA Top Gear - VERY RARE - LISTENprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
A limited, European CD containing great, 80-minute live material from 1968 made up of fragments of three shows, recorded just before and just after the release of the LP "A Saucerful Of Secrets", made in June. The 25-minute show from Rome was presented on Dutch radio in the late 90s, so the quality is excellent. The 30-minute recording from Los Angeles (the band played before the main star - Jeff Beck Group) is slightly weaker, but very, very good, and besides the playing is stunning - especially the unique interpretation of "Interstellar Overdrive", where David sounds on guitar almost like Syd! There are also three unique recordings from the concert in Utrecht in the Netherlands, including a long version of "Let There Be More Light", the full "Flaming" and "Keep Smiling People", not published anywhere and known from one recording - which is an embryonic version of "Careful With That Axe Eugene". This (middle) part sounds very average (though quite clear), but it is invaluable to every fan of the band. Overall, this CD contains the best-preserved and very representative, almost complete live set by Pink Floyd from 1968! An absolute must! (JL) -
