A completely unknown British group, somewhat reminiscent of The Moody Blues, but playing with more bite. Plenty of mellotron and organ, sophisticated compositions, a psychedelic atmosphere. I love these slightly "dreamy" productions, where the bands sound very 'mysterious' (e.g. Velvett Fogg, Ghost, Woody Kern, Arcadium). A MUST! -

This limited, collectable CD of nearly 80 minutes, released in a small run, contains above all the only band, 44-minute premiere performance, from September 1970, of Jon Lord's composition 'Gemini Suite' - known from the legendary keyboardist's solo album released in 1971 (with the help of several friends, including Glover and Paice). Of course we are dealing here with the Blackmore/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice line-up! This is sophisticated, strongly progressive playing (band + orchestra) in the style of the LP 'Concerto For Group And Orchestra' (1969). Recorded by the BBC (which, for legal reasons, all earlier versions of this title kept quiet about) and originally released in 1970 on a limited, promotional BBC Transcription Service disc - the sound quality is almost perfect - even slightly better than on the editions last released 15 years ago. Besides the three-part suite, as many as 35 rare recordings from the same period are additionally included: the 12-minute version of 'Mandrake Root' from London, from July 1970, released nowhere else, and 4 recordings (including 3 in fragments) made in the same July 1970 for Granada TV and released on the excellent, though short, VHS cassette 'Doing Their Thing'. In all we have here 79 minutes of Deep Purple from the classic period! A must! (JL) Condition: new, sealed. -

This is a limited CD, released in a small run, containing the first recorded concert with the then new vocalist Ian Gillan, which took place at the end of August 1969 at the Paradiso club in Amsterdam! This splendid 77-minute CD (a greatly improved and better-sounding version of the good old CD "Ritchie's Blues" from 1989) contains, among others, an early version of "Speed King" (here as the 9-minute "Kneel & Pray") and, leaving aside the version from the LP "Made In Japan", probably the best, brilliantly sung performance of "Child In Time" - a full eight months before the release of the LP "In Rock"! The sound quality is excellent (the source was a Dutch radio broadcast, from 1987), though in the first recording the sound engineers could not cope with the balance (no guitar for half of the recording), and "Mandrake Root" was faded out after five minutes. Fortunately, however, the publisher very neatly worked in the missing twelve minutes from two rare and professionally recorded other performances from the same period! Additionally included is an 11-minute version of "Paint In Black", which did not fit on the single CD "Live In Montreux, October 1969", also released by Sweet Leaf Records. A must! (JL) -

A limited, 78-minute CD, released in a small run, being a recording (taken from the mixing desk) of an excellent Deep Purple concert from the legendary casino in Montreux, Switzerland (the one later described in 'Smoke On The Water') from October 1969 - already in the classic line-up with Gillan and Glover - played a full eight months before the release of the album "In Rock". This is the only surviving full performance by the band from the first concert tour with I.G. and R.G. in 1969 and the only surviving recording of a live version of "Kentucky Woman" with Gillan on vocals! Besides, at the end of 1969 the band played somewhat more progressively than a year later! The sound quality is practically excellent! Note! The 11-minute version of the Stones' song "Paint It Black" was moved to the CD "Live In Amsterdam, August 1969", also released by Sweet Leaf Records! A must! NEW, SEALED. (JL) -

A wonderful, progressive and without doubt pioneering album with distinctly jazzy elements, released at the end of 1970 - recorded by future musicians of Gong, Caravan, Nucleus and Soft Machine. This CD, lasting 79 minutes, contains splendid, extended compositions free of musical padding, a dense sound, and above all the fantastic, emotional (and fortunately free of the hoarseness popular at the time...) female vocal of Carol Grimes - one of the best rock vocalists of the day! How good this album is can be heard literally from the first 10-20 seconds! NOTE! The earlier CD version, long unavailable, was credited under the name Delivery, but the original vinyl (faithfully reproduced in this booklet) was credited as Carol Grimes And Delivery. Released at the end of 1973 by CBS, a great album by a hard blues-rock Belgian band, led by the former leader of the blues-rock band Burning Plague - known for the cult LP from 1970. Doctor Downtrip is classic, fairly heavy, thoroughbred European playing, a bit in the vein of our Breakout from 1972-1974, but in my opinion better. Additionally included are six rare recordings from three singles from 1970-1973. Highly recommended! Condition: New, sealed. (JL) -

Released in 1972, the only album by the German band Dschinn belongs to the most interesting items in the catalogue of Bacillus Records, the label owned by Bellaphon. The band went for compact, guitar-driven compositions combining hard rock, psychedelia and blues, with distinct influences of British progressive artists of the early 70s. Among the record's greatest assets are attractive compositions combining catchy melodies with a heavy, bluesy pulse, strong guitar riffs, exceptionally capable playing by the rhythm section and... a great sleeve! The album was recorded in only five days, practically 'live', on four-track equipment, which gave it a raw, authentic sound. Additionally 4 recordings from 1972, unreleased on vinyl, are included. The two albums show Dzyan's development from psychedelic rock towards a more spacious mixture of jazz, electronics and oriental music, with a very important role for guitar, sitar, mellotron and extended percussion. -

A new, remastered, limited, European edition (IN THE GERMAN POLYDOR SLEEVE FROM 1972, NEVER USED ON CD) of the excellent second album by the once very popular Dutchmen, released by Polydor in October 1971. Considered by many the best achievement of this progressive band (with a charming, female vocal), recalling here the style of the then Pink Floyd (juicily wailing guitar), early Genesis (beautiful melodies) and the debut of King Crimson (mellotron) with a vocal in the style of Mariska Veres of Shocking Blue. The first side of the record was filled with 4 shorter tracks (including the brilliant, building, flagship 'Storm And Thunder'), while the second part of the original vinyl was taken up by the brilliant, title, multi-part, 18-minute suite, kept in a varied but generally dark mood and enchanting with almost symphonic sweep. What is more interesting, the bonus tracks are in no way inferior to 'the second one' and may even be better! The singles (A and B sides) released at the time were splendid, and the added, television versions sound better and stronger than the originals! The booklet contains a reproduction of the black-and-gold front and middle of the original, Dutch sleeve, so nothing has been lost. AN ABSOLUTE MUST! Condition: New, sealed. (JL) -

A new, remastered, limited, European edition of the third (and last excellent) album, recorded in autumn 1972 and released by Polydor in March 1973, by Dutchmen playing stylish top-shelf progressive rock in the style of Pink Floyd, Camel, old Genesis, The Moody Blues and Focus - with a great, female vocal. As with the CD 'Songs Of The Marching Children' (also recently released with bonus tracks by Prog Gems), one side of the record is filled by a brilliant, probably even better, delightful 17-minute suite combining stunning melody with the progressive canon. All fans of classic prog rock (wailing but powerful-sounding guitars, analogue synthesiser, Hammond organ, mellotron, dark atmospheres) will be delighted and I know what I'm writing, because over the years I strongly underrated this album! Additionally 7 recordings are added to the disc - including the B-side of a single from 1974 and a nearly 40-minute fragment of a great concert from March 1974 coming from the archive of the band's original sound engineer. Unfortunately, after 1975 (after a nice fourth record) the band turned towards pop music and somewhat tarnished its reputation as, alongside Focus, in my opinion the best progressive band from Holland! The sound is excellent and of course beats hands down the lifeless versions from YouTube or Spotify. AN ABSOLUTE MUST! Condition: New, sealed. (JL)
