An attractively presented reissue of the debut album by the psychedelic Britons - far better than the vinyl original from Polydor from the end of 1968, deliberately scuffed at the printing house (to look used - hence the double meaning of the term "second hand")... Ethelion has reissued one of the most interesting and most moving albums in the history of British psychedelic rock (or perhaps early progressive). It was very varied playing, full of surprising moments - from charming pop-psychedelia through guitar-driven, almost Hendrix-like heat-ups - right up to dark, atmospheric and almost suicidal moods with church organ in the foreground (the 9-minute "Mainliner" is worth every penny...). Every, but really every fan who likes the fusion of bold psychedelia and early prog rock from the end of the 60s MUST have this record! Attention! Released in a laminated sleeve (with front and back swapped - so that at last someone could read the name and title), the record sounds 30-40% cleaner, better than all the earlier versions on CD or LP - including the unfortunate original worth 300-400 euros! I always thought that the Sensational Alex Harvey Band was a rather mediocre group! Until the moment when I listened in peace to their least popular (and best) album, the debut released in 1972 - it is excellent! A combination of classic hard-rock with elements of progression and... musical theatre. Recommended, all the more so because the band Tear Gas plays on it! The LP was once released on the Vertigo "swirl". The second album, from 1973, also a successful one (adored in England), is somewhat simpler - closer to the aesthetics of (ambitious) glam-rock. Highly recommended. -

The guitarist was the leader and main composer of the pop-psychedelic formation Angel Pavement. A transcription of the children's book Wind In The Willows (whose seventh chapter bore the telling name 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn'...), recorded in autumn 1969 as a demo tape, was to be developed by the band, but unfortunately that never happened. This beautifully presented CD is filled with delicate, melodic music (guitar and vocals) somewhat in the style of the calmer passages of Alice Through The Looking Glass. Plus 10 tracks from 1970-71. -

An absolute sensation! CD debut of the brilliant first album (released in March 1969 by British EMI Columbia under the title "Temples With Prophets", and in France in a psychedelic sleeve as "Don Shinn Takes A Trip") by organist Don Shinn, who together with his band recorded a completely instrumental masterpiece, a somewhat more mature version of the early The Nice and Brian Auger's Trinity, with more than a pinch of Edvard Grieg and... Arzachel! Keith Emerson was a great fan of Shinn and it was precisely under his influence that he formed The Nice! This is top-shelf playing and, to tell the truth, it is frightening that until some time ago (up until the release of the great compilation CD "Maximum Prog", with the track "A Minor Explosion" opening it) I had no idea this artist existed! This is an absolutely obligatory item for all fans of psych-prog-jazz-rock (or whatever you want to call it...) with organ. Perfect sound quality. Plus a fantastic single track from 1966, which is also the answer to which band recorded the first progressive (small) record! A MUST! (JL) -
