GRACIOUS - GRACIOUS - Gracious! / This Is... Gracious!! (2CD) - UK BGO Edition - LISTENprice: 100,00 PLN / 25,00 EUR
Both albums by this British band belong to the very top rank of British prog-rock, and the debut is one of my favourite little-known records in the genre!!! Extended compositions, charming melodies and (especially on the debut) an intriguing, very psychedelic mood. Absolute classic! Double British edition. A must! -

GRAIL - GRAIL - Grail - SWE Flawed Gems Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
A remastered edition of the sole yet almost perfect album by a British band playing top-notch progressive rock, with strong influences of late psychedelia and not shy of acoustic playing with clear oriental elements. The album was recorded in summer 1970, but released only in January 1971 in Germany (in the black-and-white, abstract sleeve of the Metronome label) and in France (in a comic-style sleeve from Barclay) - never in the United Kingdom. This version contains both covers (the French one appears inside), so you have a choice. The sound quality is better than the Prog Temple edition. Highly recommended! BELOW IS A REVIEW OF THE ALBUM FROM THE SECOND VOLUME OF MY 'BRITISH ROCK' (G-L):..........It is worth knowing that two musicians of this somewhat forgotten band had previously played in the legendary freakbeat band The Game - responsible, among other things, for the sensational single The Addicted Man/Help Me Mummy's Gone (Parlophone, 1967), worth 1000 pounds. Grail was another progressive band (alongside, among others, Diabolus, Little Big Horn and Sunday) whose only album never reached the British market, although it came out in France (in a very striking, colourful sleeve) - released by Barclay, and also in Germany (in an equally nice black-and-white sleeve) – released by Metronome. The January 1971 LP Grail was produced by the (still relatively little-known) Rod Stewart, though judging by the rather raw sound in the sharper passages - I get the impression that instead of in the recording studio, Rod The Mod spent more time in the nearby pub… The album contained fairly advanced and at times very sophisticated progressive music - very typical of 1970, as it combined heavy rock with more than a pinch of psychedelia, folk, ballad and even oriental music. The opening Power, which lasts over 7 minutes and is built on heavy guitar riffs, was characterised by a primal, growling and almost heavy-metal vocal and by dynamic, though very nervous playing from the whole band (as if everyone were in a hurry somewhere) – a bit in the style of the band Jerusalem. Surprisingly, it was one of the few such dynamic numbers, as the following tracks showed the band in a slightly different light: the folky Bleek Wind High was recorded with acoustic guitar, clarinet and flute; the classicising, subtly arranged Day After Day was somewhat reminiscent of a more folky/balladic Procol Harum; the decidedly oriental, swaying Grail used sitar and timpani; the rhythmic Camel Dung, built on a flute part, was strongly saturated with Turkish folklore (at times recalling the work of East Of Eden and especially Quintessence), though it did not lack strong rock transitions; Sunday Morning, meanwhile, is a charming, atmospheric ballad recorded with organ, classical guitar, sitar and cello; by contrast, the track Czechers, dedicated to our southern neighbours (about the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968), was a combination of a dramatic ballad and galloping rock playing; and the closing, driving The Square, though not free of changing moods, was simply an excellent and quite intense summing-up of this intriguing, underrated and of course almost entirely forgotten album. I hardly need to add that the original vinyl editions (in perfect condition) are in great demand – fetching 300-350 euros. It may also be worth knowing that the vocalist Chris Williams later ended up in the German progressive band Abacus. -

GRAVY TRAIN - GRAVY TRAIN - Gravy Train - UK Repertoire Card Sleeve Limited Edition - LISTENprice: 75,00 PLN / 18,75 EUR
Great debut album, released at the end of 1970 and lasting 50 minutes, by a British progressive formation, bringing to mind the recordings of Jethro Tull, Colosseum and at moments even King Crimson. Limited edition in a card sleeve. A must! (JL) -

GRAVY TRAIN - GRAVY TRAIN - Second Birth +4 - SWE Flawed Gems Expanded - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
Released at the beginning of 1973, the third album in the discography (and the first for the label Dawn - after leaving Vertigo) is without a doubt the strongest, most dynamic title in the career of this British hard-progressive formation. According to received opinion it is a rather average record, but for me heavy, juicy playing in the vein of early Jethro Tull (lots of strong flute) or Uriah Heep is never average. Half of the album is simply excellent and beats hands down the vast majority of the material from the first two albums, while the other four tracks (including one very Beatles-esque) do not drop below a good level. In addition four tracks from two rather average singles are included. This is a genuinely very good record and, what is more, very good-sounding! Highly recommended! -

CD
GRAVY TRAIN - GRAVY TRAIN - Staircase To The Day +4 - UK Repertoire Expanded Card Sleeve Limited Editionprice: 75,00 PLN / 18,75 EUR
A British band with a style that is hard to define. The first two excellent records contain a mixture of the styles of Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and a little Colosseum. The first is more "twisted", while the second is art-rock. The underrated third is... underrated, while the last album (recorded with a different line-up) is slightly disappointing, although it is somewhat saved by a superb Roger Dean cover. Edition limited to 3000 copies in mini LP form, with four bonus tracks. (JL) -

GREENFLY - GREENFLY - Satan's Daughter - UK Seelie Court Card Sleeve Limited Edition - LISTENprice: 90,00 PLN / 22,50 EUR
The first-ever release of the only album by a band playing heavy progressive rock. Review from the internet: "Breathtaking, insanely heavy prog with deranged lead guitars and whirling organs, Writing On The Wall meets Bent Wind, with a large dose of Hawkwind's 'In Search Of Space'. Killer vocals somewhere between Robert Plant and Jim Morrison. The album begins with the killer title track." Gatefold cardboard sleeve. -

GREENSLADE (see also: Colosseum / Samurai UK / Web) - GREENSLADE - Greenslade + BBC Sessions (2CD) - UK Esoteric Remastered Expanded Edition - LISTENprice: 90,00 PLN / 22,50 EUR
The debut and without doubt the best album (from 1973) by a British progressive band (playing two keyboards but no guitar), reminiscent here of the work of early Yes and Fields. In addition, a beautiful cover by Roger Dean. The second disc has added great tracks recorded in the studio and at a concert for BBC radio. Highly recommended! -

GREENSLADE (see also: Colosseum / Samurai UK / Web) - GREENSLADE - Temple Songs - Albums 1973-1975 (4CD) - UK Esoteric Remastered Editionprice: 160,00 PLN / 40,00 EUR
A four-disc box set from 2021 containing, remastered, all the albums released by the band in the seventies. Greenslade was formed by two former members of Colosseum, the keyboard player Dave Greenslade and the bassist Tony Reeves. The line-up was completed by Dave Lawson - vocals, keyboard instruments (earlier in Web and Samurai) and Andrew McCulloch - drums (King Crimson on the album "Lizard" and Fields). What distinguished the band on the progressive scene of the time above all was the two keyboard players in the line-up. The whole thing in a rigid box, with a richly illustrated, 32-page booklet inside. Highly recommended! (MU) -

GRINGO (see also: Caravan) - GRINGO - Gringo +2 - SWE Flawed Gems Remastered Expanded - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
Remastered edition, sounding much cleaner and more dynamic than previous ones, of the only, but very good, progressive album by a British group inspired by the work of Rare Bird, Procol Harum, Yes and Caravan, with clear elements of classic, heavyish rock. It is hard to define their music so unambiguously... Sophisticated arrangements, surprising changes of rhythm, a nice, 'Rare Bird-like' keyboard sound, female and male vocals (in the style of early Earth & Fire), and finally very good, catchy compositions, including a genuinely brilliant first track. Highly recommended! -

The third and probably best album by the British trio (with the brilliant Tony McPhee on guitar) - combining the aesthetics of uncompromising, though rather broken-up hard rock of the Led Zeppelin and Budgie kind, with late psychedelia and with blues. A 2019 reissue, extended by five tracks. -

GROUP 1850 - GROUP 1850 - Polyandri - AUS Progressive Line Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
The band's third catalogue album - released in 1974 - five years after the brilliant "Paradise Now". Fortunately the band remained faithful to psychedelic moods and again offered decidedly progressive, somewhat Floyd-like playing - but with a clearly imprinted stamp of its own. One of the best progressive records of the mid-70s! Highly recommended! (JL)
