Released in 1971, the legendary, only album by a Dutch band combining at times heavyish progressive rock with psychedelia and which may bring to mind the Pretty Things' LP "Parachute" (1970), underrated in Poland, as well as the early recordings of Focus and Jethro Tull. As an original on the Negram label it is probably the most expensive progressive record from the Netherlands, fetching 1000-1200 euros in perfect condition. Plus five recordings from Dutch TV from 1971 are included. Very highly recommended! (JL) -

A remastered, great-sounding reissue, unavailable for many years, of the only album, released in February 1973, by a forgotten Swiss band. The band impressed with a high standard of performance and maturity of composition, and at the same time skilfully and variously combined a heavy, organ-and-guitar sound with distinctly British roots with melodic rock. On the one hand you can hear here the influences of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Pink Floyd and Van Der Graaf Generator, but also of French progressive bands such as Ange and Triangle. You listen to the record in one breath, because (except for one 3-minute musical joke) it was filled with 'nothing but the dense stuff'! I will only add that on the second part of the original vinyl there was a 20-minute, progressive suite! 'Substratum' remains one of the most interesting, though little-known, records of continental European progressive rock of the first half of the 70s. A MUST! Condition: New, sealed. (JL) -

The two-disc release Cravinkel & Garden of Loneliness presents the complete studio output of one of the most interesting, and at the same time underrated, German bands of the turn of the sixties and seventies. The first album (with a sleeve showing the musicians on a haystack) resembled early Neil Young, while the second is very intense, hard rock (slightly progressive), jamming playing live - in the studio. Only three tracks, rock dynamite! Highly recommended! -

European reissue of the only, completely forgotten, but great album by a British progressive band, originally released in 1970 (only in the Netherlands and Germany), echoing almost directly the slightly jazzy and so typical of 1970 (saxophone, flute, electric guitar, dense drumming) eclectic style of early Jethro Tull, Blodwyn Pig, Traffic and the unknown band Diabolus. Geoff Leigh played the wind instruments - soon after a member of Henry Cow. The only flaws of this album are: the 3-minute, dreary track opening the whole thing, which departs from the style of the rest of the compositions, and the (probably) artificial applause pasted in between tracks. Excellent sound quality! A must for fans of progressive rock! (JL) -

This limited, collectable CD of nearly 80 minutes, released in a small run, contains above all the only band, 44-minute premiere performance, from September 1970, of Jon Lord's composition 'Gemini Suite' - known from the legendary keyboardist's solo album released in 1971 (with the help of several friends, including Glover and Paice). Of course we are dealing here with the Blackmore/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice line-up! This is sophisticated, strongly progressive playing (band + orchestra) in the style of the LP 'Concerto For Group And Orchestra' (1969). Recorded by the BBC (which, for legal reasons, all earlier versions of this title kept quiet about) and originally released in 1970 on a limited, promotional BBC Transcription Service disc - the sound quality is almost perfect - even slightly better than on the editions last released 15 years ago. Besides the three-part suite, as many as 35 rare recordings from the same period are additionally included: the 12-minute version of 'Mandrake Root' from London, from July 1970, released nowhere else, and 4 recordings (including 3 in fragments) made in the same July 1970 for Granada TV and released on the excellent, though short, VHS cassette 'Doing Their Thing'. In all we have here 79 minutes of Deep Purple from the classic period! A must! (JL) Condition: new, sealed. -

This is a limited CD, released in a small run, containing the first recorded concert with the then new vocalist Ian Gillan, which took place at the end of August 1969 at the Paradiso club in Amsterdam! This splendid 77-minute CD (a greatly improved and better-sounding version of the good old CD "Ritchie's Blues" from 1989) contains, among others, an early version of "Speed King" (here as the 9-minute "Kneel & Pray") and, leaving aside the version from the LP "Made In Japan", probably the best, brilliantly sung performance of "Child In Time" - a full eight months before the release of the LP "In Rock"! The sound quality is excellent (the source was a Dutch radio broadcast, from 1987), though in the first recording the sound engineers could not cope with the balance (no guitar for half of the recording), and "Mandrake Root" was faded out after five minutes. Fortunately, however, the publisher very neatly worked in the missing twelve minutes from two rare and professionally recorded other performances from the same period! Additionally included is an 11-minute version of "Paint In Black", which did not fit on the single CD "Live In Montreux, October 1969", also released by Sweet Leaf Records. A must! (JL) -

A limited, 78-minute CD, released in a small run, being a recording (taken from the mixing desk) of an excellent Deep Purple concert from the legendary casino in Montreux, Switzerland (the one later described in 'Smoke On The Water') from October 1969 - already in the classic line-up with Gillan and Glover - played a full eight months before the release of the album "In Rock". This is the only surviving full performance by the band from the first concert tour with I.G. and R.G. in 1969 and the only surviving recording of a live version of "Kentucky Woman" with Gillan on vocals! Besides, at the end of 1969 the band played somewhat more progressively than a year later! The sound quality is practically excellent! Note! The 11-minute version of the Stones' song "Paint It Black" was moved to the CD "Live In Amsterdam, August 1969", also released by Sweet Leaf Records! A must! NEW, SEALED. (JL) -

This CD, lasting 79 minutes, contains splendid, extended compositions free of musical padding, a dense sound, and above all the fantastic, emotional (and fortunately free of the hoarseness popular at the time...) female vocal of Carol Grimes - one of the best rock vocalists of the day! How good this album is can be heard literally from the first 10-20 seconds! NOTE! The earlier CD version, long unavailable, was credited under the name Delivery, but the original vinyl (faithfully reproduced in this booklet) was credited as Carol Grimes And Delivery. Dickinson's third solo album, which was to be credited to the name Skunkworks, to which the label did not agree. The vocalist's intention was to move away from metal towards something more reminiscent of the work of Rush, Alice In Chains or Soundgarden, and the producer of the record was Jack Endino, known for his work on Nirvana's debut. Remastered 2005 edition, with an additional CD containing seven unreleased tracks from the same session and four live recordings from performances in Pamplona and Girona in Spain, on 31 May and 1 June 1996. The Doc Thomas Group was a band whose members were: the vocalist Stan Tippins, the guitarists Mick Ralphs and Dave Tedstone, the bassist Pete Watts and the drummer Bob Hall. Performing at an Italian club they received an offer of a record contract from the local label Interrecord and in October 1966 in Milan recorded an album titled "Doc Thomas Group". It was released in January 1967, but unfortunately only in Italy, and the band soon after changed its name to Shakedown Sound, and then to Silence. After they began working with Guy Stevens of Island Records, Tippins was forced to leave. He was replaced by Ian Hunter and the group changed its name to Mott The Hoople. On this CD the "Italian" album (renamed "Italian Job") is joined by fifteen Silence tracks recorded after the reunion, in October 1990. -

Released at the end of 1973 by CBS, a great album by a hard blues-rock Belgian band, led by the former leader of the blues-rock band Burning Plague - known for the cult LP from 1970. Doctor Downtrip is classic, fairly heavy, thoroughbred European playing, a bit in the vein of our Breakout from 1972-1974, but in my opinion better. Additionally included are six rare recordings from three singles from 1970-1973. Highly recommended! Condition: New, sealed. (JL)
