NIEMEN - NIEMEN - In Italy 1969-1970 - ITALIAN Limited Press - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 120,00 PLN / 30,00 EUR
First time on a full-size vinyl record! Released in a limited run in Italy, superb, perfect-sounding, over 50-minute, unique material originally recorded by Niemen in Italy (first with the band Akwarele and then with Enigmatic) between February 1969 and March 1970. Produced in a very attractive, gatefold sleeve (containing inside the designs of all the significant Italian releases with Niemen's recordings and a copy of a rare, promotional poster), the vinyl gathers fifteen recordings - including six from the very rare and fan-sought three monophonic singles on the CGD label (though "Io Senza Lei", that is "Dziwny jest ten świat", is here in a rare stereo mix); then three previously unreleased tracks from unique compilations (recorded with Enigmatic), two previously unreleased demo recordings from February 1969 (one sung in English) and four unpublished, live pieces from May 1969 ('covers' of foreign classics, such as "Jumpin' Jack Flash" or "Hey Jude"), from a performance in a small Roman club. After 1970 none of the nine studio, Italian-language recordings ever appeared on any format, either in Poland or in Italy! The sound quality is perfect (better than on YouTube!), although the live recordings taken from the mixing desk have certain limitations, they still sound far better than the versions sometimes available on the internet. This is an absolutely obligatory item for every single lover, without exception, of the work of both Niemen and classic Polish rock! AN ABSOLUTE MUST! Condition: NEW, SEALED (with a sticker on the shrink-wrap). -

NIEMEN - NIEMEN - Live In Opole 1971 - SPA Red Circle Press - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 110,00 PLN / 27,50 EUR
A superb, perfectly sounding (the sound comes from the mixing desk), hour-long recording made at the Opole festival in July 1971. Released in a very attractive gatefold sleeve, the vinyl contains only five extended tracks - including two suites: "Bema pamięci żałobny rapsod" and "Człowiek jam niewdzięczny". Czesław was accompanied by the musicians behind the 'Red Album' - with Mikuła and Jaśkiewicz in the leading roles. To tell the truth, it is hard to understand why this wonderful concert never came out in Poland - perhaps because it spent all those years in private hands... A MUST! -
LP
NIEMEN - NIEMEN - On Stage 1970-1972 - SPA Red Circle Press - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 100,00 PLN / 25,00 EUR
An hour of excellent-sounding material recorded by two line-ups of the band Niemen: 20 minutes at the Jazz Jamboree festival in 1970 (the line-up from the 'Red Album') and 40 minutes in Opole in 1972 (Czesław + the future SBB and Helmut Nadolski and Andrzej Przybielski). A revelation! A 2019 Spanish edition. -

NIEMEN - NIEMEN - Live In Helsinki 1973 - GER Green Tree Press - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 110,00 PLN / 27,50 EUR
Released in Germany by Green Tree Records (the label responsible for the reissues of four CBS records from 1972-1974), unreleased, very good-sounding 40-minute material, recorded by the band Niemen (Czesław + the entire future SBB) at a concert in Helsinki in June 1973. Very good and noise-free sound (greatly improved compared with the somewhat muddy version known from the film footage). In addition, two fragments, lasting ten minutes in total, from the 'Olympic' concert in Munich in August 1972: "Puppets (Marionetki)" and the very short "Figo-Fago" (that is, the classic blues standard "Rollin' And Tumblin' " known from Cream's performance, among others). A MUST! Condition: New, sealed. -

NUCLEUS (CAN) (see also: A Foot In Coldwater) - NUCLEUS - Nucleus - US 180g Limited Press - LISTENprice: 120,00 PLN / 30,00 EUR
American reissue of the only, but genuinely excellent, album by a somewhat forgotten Canadian formation which 2 years later turned into the hard rock A Foot In Coldwater. Heavy, intense playing with dominant Hammond sounds and a wonderfully overdriven (but not overdone) guitar; besides that, plenty of intense, meaty and almost progressive playing - as it was in 1969... Something like a Vanilla Fudge 3 times better and more rock-oriented, without the intrusive vocals. Recommended. Condition: NEW - sealed. -

OCTOPUS (UK) - OCTOPUS - Restless Night - SPA Guerssen 180g Press - LISTEN - LAST COPY!price: 250,00 PLN / 62,50 EUR
Very tasteful Spanish reissue, now out of print, in a gatefold sleeve, of the only album by a British psychedelic formation. This album, made over the course of 1969 and 1970, contained very charming, pop-psychedelic material close to late The Beatles and Honeybus, what is more adorned with nice, almost progressive organ parts. The original LP from 1970 is worth 700-800 euros today, so it is worth investing in this very attractive reissue, expanded with one bonus track and an additional insert! Recommended! New, sealed, last copy! (JL) -

CD
OLYMPIC - OLYMPIC - Zelva +11 - CZE Supraphon Remastered Expanded Edition - LISTENprice: 90,00 PLN / 22,50 EUR
"During the same, October session the band recorded several quite modern-sounding recordings which, alongside the tracks captured on tape in early spring, ended up on the debut album Želva, released as early as 1968 - at the same time the first Czech longplay of rock music in history! On this record, released in mono and in stereo and at the same time excellently produced, the band offered a very attractive and non-trivial mixture, composed for the most part by the duo Janda/Chrastina, of mid-60s British freakbeat close to The Beatles and The Yardbirds; white rhythm'n'blues in the style of The Rolling Stones and Them; and the then increasingly popular and practically unheard-of in the Eastern Bloc countries early psychedelia of the The Byrds, The Doors and The Who kind. The 35-minute album opened with Želva, previously released on a single - a lively number with harmonica, based on a strong, slightly broken rhythm, decidedly drawing on early Them - Van Morrison. A classic! Second came Vzpomínka Plíživá, based on the interplay of guitars and organ - a piece created during the October session, harking back a little to the psychedelic The Byrds, but still evoking echoes of early The Animals. The bawdy Línej Skaut that followed, which sounded as if it had come out of a good drinking session, brought to mind the mood of 'The Good Soldier Švejk', but I confess that I could live without this, in sum Dylan-like number, recorded with the help of an accordion, a trombone and simple strokes of a bass drum... Then the band offered two charming rock ballads: the decidedly Beatles-like Dám Zejtra Zas Flám, sounding almost like an outtake from the album Help! and Modravé Mámení, strongly resembling The Byrds (and I Got You Babe by the duo Sonny & Cher) and garnished with nice drumming by the evidently gifted Jan 'Sorry' Pacák and the pleasant sound of a ringing guitar, nicely overdriven during the solo. The first side was closed by the decent Nikdo Neotvírá - a cheerful piece, though contributing little to the whole, inspired by I Feel Fine by The Beatles. The second part opened with the decidedly Stones-like Nebezpečná Postava, played at an unusually fast rhythm, though too light for me, after which came the very successful, balladic Snad Jsem To Zavinil Já, released earlier on the A-side of a single - a catchy guitar piece sung by Janda in a delicate voice, at moments recalling The House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals and right at the end also evoking For Your Love by The Yardbirds. There is nothing to be ashamed of in good role models! Dědečkův Duch, recorded in February 1967 and sung with great ease, was a much-needed dose of dynamic and catchy pop-rock garnished with neat entries of sharp guitar. By contrast, the slightly swaying, excellent Jen Bůh Ví, sung in a sleepy voice by the bassist Pavel Chrastina, was a pleasant but at the same time majestic, almost psychedelic ballad, and right after it appeared the under-2-minute Telefon - a rhythm'n'blues number played at a very fast tempo, with harmonica and a nice part for twangy guitar. The record was closed in great style by the 6-minute-20-second, genuinely legendary Psychiatrický Prášek - a superb, decidedly psychedelic rock track that is a peculiar blend of She's Not There by The Zombies, I'm Going Home by The Rolling Stones and The End by The Doors - and what is more garnished with haunted vocals straight from the titular psychiatric ward! It is only a pity that the band did not play for 2-3 minutes longer... It must be admitted that the LP Želva can be listened to almost in one breath and I am really full of admiration that our southern neighbours were able to produce such an innovative, invigorating and at the same time melody-rich (though sometimes borrowed) record! At that time the rest of Eastern European rock was still gazing solely at The Beatles, The Animals or, worse still, at soul music... It is worth knowing that only about 5000 copies appeared in the artistic cover with the titular tortoise (by the drummer), and since the lead times at the monopoly printing house were long and booked up, subsequent pressings of the record appeared either in hastily made, unattractive sleeves, or in covers with a large Supraphon logo on the front and with the track titles and an editorial note on the back. After 1970, however, the album was no longer reissued at all and today it is a great rarity, though practically never seen in great condition. Records in 'EX/EX' condition are worth over 150 euros, while 'Near Mint' copies in the tortoise cover can easily fetch prices of 250-300 euros! I confess that I never had trouble getting hold of the band's albums, since quite by chance the first three Olympic titles (in almost perfect condition) were brought to my shop in the mid-90s by a Czech tourist (crammed into a huge backpack), who exchanged them with undisguised joy for CDs that interested him..." A REVIEW BY JACEK LEŚNIEWSKI FROM A BOOK ON ROCK IN THE FORMER EASTERN BLOC, BEGUN BUT ABANDONED AFTER HALF A YEAR (2021). A remastered reissue in a digipak, extended by 11 tracks, from 2019. -

OMEGA (HUN) (see also: Locomotiv GT / Neoton) - OMEGA - 10000 Lepes +4 - Hungarian GrundRecords Remastered Expanded - LISTENprice: 85,00 PLN / 21,25 EUR
A remastered version from 2022. Released in 1969, a fantastic, second, Hungarian album containing above all 'Girl With Pearl Hair' but also several other killers, such as the title track, 'Tekozlo Fiuk' or 'Tuzvihar'. This mixture of late psychedelia/early progressive rock in the vein of Procol Harum and The Moody Blues, heavy rock in the style of Hendrix and folk ballad - all of it mixed with the addition of sharp Hungarian spices - was at the time world-class when it came to Eastern Rock! Compared with this album, the work of, say, Polish bands simply did not exist! A Hungarian remastered CD with excellent, perfectly fitting four bonus tracks from excellent singles. AN ABSOLUTE MUST! CD
OMEGA (HUN) (see also: Locomotiv GT / Neoton) - OMEGA - Omega Red Star From Hungary - UK 1968 Decca Album - AUT Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
Not counting the unofficial Hungarian CD released a few years ago by a 'pseudo-Universal' (and which is even mentioned on progarchives.com), this is the CD debut of a very good, though completely forgotten, second album by Omega, recorded by the band during their stay in London (May 1968) and released exclusively by British Decca. That is also why on the back of the sleeve of the vinyl edition of the LP 10 000 Lepes, released a year later, there was the mark: "No. 3"! This material, sung in English (with one exception), was a cross between the debut LP Trombitas Fredi and the already mentioned, genuinely excellent LP 10 000 Lepes, that is, a combination of psychedelic rock, budding prog rock, pop and folk with a dominant organ sound, catchy melodies and timid studio experiments with sound. If only the track Trumpeter Charlie (that is, the unfortunate, vaudeville Trombitas Fredi from the debut) were missing, the record would have gained even more class. In any case, it is a charming album that grows on you more with each listen. Oh, and on the record all the tracks were sung by the organist Gabor Presser, because Janos Kobor had to sit some exams in Hungary... It may be worth knowing that the original Decca Records vinyl, sold in only a few hundred copies, is worth 400 euros today (in perfect condition)! The CD sounds excellent - very spacious and clean! A must! -
CD
OMEGA (HUN) (see also: Locomotiv GT / Neoton) - OMEGA - Beat (Rare Tracks 1966-1968) - Hungarian GrundRecords Edition - LISTENprice: 90,00 PLN / 22,50 EUR
A compilation of recordings from 1966–1968, that is the period just before the debut album 'Trombitas Fredi' (1968), and of course before the band worked out its own, psych-prog-rock sound in 1969. The remastered, Hungarian CD contains both Hungarian compositions and interpretations of the world hits of the day, including pieces by The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, The Spencer Davis Group, Tom Jones and Herman's Hermits. The material shows the group as an excellent beat band, drawing on British rock, rhythm & blues and soul, but already revealing its own character. János Kóbor's characteristic singing, melodic guitar and organ parts and youthful energy give these recordings an exceptional character. A MUST! -

OMEGA (HUN) (see also: Locomotiv GT / Neoton) - OMEGA - Elo Omega (Original 1972 Album Version) +6 - AUT Enigmatic Remastered & Expanded - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
This is the best album Omega ever recorded and (in my humble opinion) perhaps the best record from Eastern Europe?! At last someone has come to their senses and reissued on CD the fourth in the Hungarian discography, supposedly live record, released in 1972 in an aluminium (!) cover, which was made mainly in the studio, as well as during 'live' performances. The problem is that to all the tracks were added applause, at moments artificial-sounding (e.g. appearing suddenly), or cries from the audience. Personally I really like these shouts and know them almost by heart, and the LP itself is an exemplary case of how heavy, but melodic progressive rock should be played! Years later a clean version, without the audience noise but rather metallically compressed, was released on CD under the title '200 Evvel Az Utolso Haboru Utan' (1998). This one, however, is a remastered and greatly improved edition of the original vinyl release from 1972. It is worth knowing that even the first CD edition of Elo Omega (in a grey cover with red lettering) contained a changed, compressed mix from 1980 (known from the 5-record vinyl box set). So this ORIGINAL VERSION HAS BEEN RELEASED ON CD FOR THE FIRST TIME! In addition 2 brand new tracks from the 'studio' CD, 4 tracks from singles of the time and several nice photos from the original vinyl editions (including the Czech Supraphon) are included. The whole thing now sounds very dynamic and miles better than ever, although slight hiss is still audible. AN ABSOLUTE MUST! -

OMEGA (HUN) (see also: Locomotiv GT / Neoton) - OMEGA – Gammapolis (Hungarian Version, 1979) - Hungarian GrundRecords Remastered Edition - LISTENprice: 90,00 PLN / 22,50 EUR

LP
OMEGA (HUN) (see also: Locomotiv GT / Neoton) - OMEGA – Omega (1st German Album) (LP) - GER MIG Press - LISTENprice: 120,00 PLN / 30,00 EUR
The English-language debut released by German Bellaphon in 1973 (reissued in 2022 by the German MIG: Made In Germany) and made up of compositions earlier released on 'Elo Omega' and '5', including the brilliant 'After A Hard Year' and 'White Magic Stone'. The record opened the way to the West European market for the band. The musicians successfully combined the melodiousness and hard rock dynamics characteristic of earlier records with a more mature, more progressive sound, enriched with Hammond organ, mellotron and Moog synthesisers. A German, limited reissue on 180 g vinyl. A must! (JL)
