Released in 1970 by the (American) label Decca, the only and truly nice album by an American formation from New York with the future original Kiss drummer - Peter Criss (then still 'Cris') - in the line-up. Nice, guitar-driven playing with perceptible influences of psychedelic and progressive rock. (K) -

Nowadays, for the average rock lover the group Chicago is a synonym for tackiness and pop commercialism. However, it is worth remembering that in 1969-1973 the band played first-rate, progressive jazz rock and few groups of the time could equal them in musicianship or (admirable) arrangements. It is also worth noting that many of the little-known British progressive formations so adored by fans drew their inspiration precisely from Chicago (e.g. Aquila, Raw Material, Heaven, Galliard). The concert organised by Bill Graham at Tanglewood took place in June 1970 - at the time when the band was recording its third album. In any case, this 80-minute, perfect-sounding CD contains only tracks from the first two albums and one from the 'third'. This is top-shelf rock material! A must! -

Half produced by Nick Mason (the Pink Floyd drummer appeared on one track, and keyboardist Rick Wright on 5), this folk-psych-rock album, unreleased in its day (planned by the label Morgan Blue Town for mid-1970 and put out by Tenth Planet in 2002), without a doubt deserves special attention! Alongside two female vocalists the band featured Bob Weston (ex-Black Cat Bones and Ashkan) and bassist Nick South (ex-Second Hand). The result is quite a varied album that will appeal both to fans of folky, baroque sounds in the vein of Pentangle and Donovan, and to fans of decidedly progressive, heavy-bluesy moods (almost without the blues...). It is a pity I did not come across this material while writing the book Brytyjski Rock... Plus 8 demo tracks. Highly recommended! -

One of my favourite and most often played albums! Top three of the best records in the history of Canadian rock - and what is more, recorded by a few 18-year-olds! It is hard to define this music unequivocally - it is supposedly hard-rock, but... a psychedelic kind. Many changes of rhythm and mood; charming, somewhat Beatles-like melodies. Two improvised, guitar tracks run for over 10 minutes. A must! -

A limited, great 80-minute CD containing a 50-minute show by the band, from August 1970 (with very good sound quality - practically equal to the Boston tape from 1969) and two never-released radio sessions. The concert was recorded for Finnish radio at a rock festival in a rather unique, because short-lived (probably my favourite) line-up - with Clempson on vocals. The setlist is very interesting, as are the two BBC radio sessions from 1969 and 1970 included. The 1970 one sounds rather average, but e.g. the 10-minute, veeery extended (compared with the nondescript record version) track "Daughter Of Time" is the most fascinating Colosseum I have heard in my life! Listening to the ultra-dynamic acceleration halfway through the recording, even despite the poor sound quality, I simply got goosebumps. That is the power of music! The 1969 session (still with James Litherland - later leader of Mogul Thrash) sounds quite good and contains, among other things, an early, still incomplete version of "Valentyne Suite". It is an excellent complement to the CD "Live In Boston", adored by fans! A must! (JL) -

Released by Elektra in 1970, the first (of two), truly excellent album by an American band playing melodic, catchy but dynamic hard rock (with elements of ambitious pop and early progressive rock) using organs. The opening "Go Back" has a fantastic kick, and the whole thing appeals to almost anyone who values playing from 1969-1970! Strangely the album did not sell very well, and the second LP was already much weaker. Vocalist/guitarist Michael Fennelly had earlier appeared on the Millennium record. Remastered and, importantly, excellent-sounding edition. Highly recommended! -

The two-disc release Cravinkel & Garden of Loneliness presents the complete studio output of one of the most interesting, and at the same time underrated, German bands of the turn of the sixties and seventies. The first album (with a sleeve showing the musicians on a haystack) resembled early Neil Young, while the second is very intense, hard rock (slightly progressive), jamming playing live - in the studio. Only three tracks, rock dynamite! Highly recommended! -

European reissue of the only, completely forgotten, but great album by a British progressive band, originally released in 1970 (only in the Netherlands and Germany), echoing almost directly the slightly jazzy and so typical of 1970 (saxophone, flute, electric guitar, dense drumming) eclectic style of early Jethro Tull, Blodwyn Pig, Traffic and the unknown band Diabolus. Geoff Leigh played the wind instruments - soon after a member of Henry Cow. The only flaws of this album are: the 3-minute, dreary track opening the whole thing, which departs from the style of the rest of the compositions, and the (probably) artificial applause pasted in between tracks. Excellent sound quality! A must for fans of progressive rock! (JL) -

An excellent, fifth album in the group's discography, containing, among others, "Who'll Stop The Rain", "Up Around The Bend" and "I Heard It Through The Grapewine". In the general opinion it is the last classic album by the band, although in my humble opinion the LP "Pendulum", released in January 1971, also had plenty of fascinating (and heavier) moments and is just as recommended! Additionally three unreleased tracks. Highly recommended! (JL) -

This great CD contains the entire output (in order: first the second record from 1970, and only then the debut from 1969) of a forgotten British formation playing heavy psychedelic/progressive rock. The first contains short, 3-minute tracks in the hard/folk/psychedelic moods characteristic of 1969. The second (once released on LP by Decca - only in Germany), meanwhile, has just six tracks full of heavy, spacious and very juicy playing. Lots of guitars, a nice vocal in the style of a young Lemmy and a veeery solid rhythm section - a complete success. Earlier John Thomas played in Rust, and later in the Edgar Broughton Band (on the LP "Bandages"). Highly recommended! (JL) -
