The second album (also from 1970) by a British progressive band with a style that is hard to define - combining elements of heavy rock, blues and jazz - with a pinch of Latin music. The CD contains, among others, two great tracks lasting nine minutes each. Recommended! (JL) -

GROUNDHOGS (see also: John Dummer Band / Egg) - GROUNDHOGS - Thank Christ For The Bomb +5 - UK Fire Records Expanded Card Sleeve Edition - LISTENprice: 85,00 PLN / 21,25 EUR
The third and probably best album by the British trio (with the brilliant Tony McPhee on guitar) - combining the aesthetics of uncompromising, though rather broken-up hard rock of the Led Zeppelin and Budgie kind, with late psychedelia and with blues. A 2019 reissue, extended by five tracks. -

GURU GURU - GURU GURU - UFO - GER Ohr Edition - LISTENprice: 80,00 PLN / 20,00 EUR
German reissue on the OHR label. Released in 1970, the debut album by this cult German progressive (krautrock) band would be perfect as the soundtrack for the landing of an alien spaceship. The most far-out album in the group's discography. Great, heavy, guitar playing in the Hendrix style, but strongly slowed down. A veeery psychedelic record. A must! (JL) -

German reissue in a gatefold sleeve of the cult, debut album by one of the most important German bands of the early 70s. Great, heavy guitar playing in the Hendrix style - rolling over the listener like a steamroller! A veeery psychedelic record sounding at moments like the soundtrack for the landing of an alien spaceship. The most far-out album in the group's discography. 2008 edition, in a gatefold sleeve. GYPSY (USA) - GYPSY - Gypsy - US Digipack Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
The debut album (a double on vinyl) by an American band playing eclectic, though rather delicate progressive rock - a bit in the vein of The Moody Blues from 1970-72 and Procol Harum. Recommended. -

HAIR - HAIR - Piece - GER Walhalla Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
Another stunning album from Denmark. Superb guitar-and-organ playing from 1970, full of catchy themes and changing moods, in a somewhat psychedelic vein. Top ten of Scandinavian rock! And, by accident, probably also the worst (though tongue-in-cheek) cover... A must! (JL) -
CD
HAMMER - HAMMER - Hammer - SWE Flawed Gems Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
On CD for the first time! The only, unfortunately rather forgotten, album by a very good American formation playing heavyish progressive rock with elements of jazz and a pinch of Latin music. Excellent guitar parts, plenty of keyboards, a strong vocal. The record was released in 1970 in the States by Bill Graham's Fillmore label, and in Europe in 1971 by Atlantic. Excellent (as always with the people at Flawed Gems) sound quality! Highly recommended! -
LP
HANNIBAL - HANNIBAL - Hannibal - EU Press - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 110,00 PLN / 27,50 EUR
Yet another forgotten British progressive band with a single, entirely captivating album to its name. Long compositions, wonderful, slightly jazzy guitar parts, almost ubiquitous Hammond organ resonating in the background and a generally palpable bluesy-jazzy, airy mood. An album kept in the style of Heaven, Walrus, If, and even early Jethro Tull - at their best moments. It is an absolutely obligatory item for every lover of British, progressive playing! Recommended! -

HARD MEAT - HARD MEAT - Hard Meat / Through A Window - AUS Progressive Line Digipack Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
One of my quiet favourites! Both albums were released in 1970 by Warner Bros - unfortunately hardly anyone was interested in them. Very subtle, though generally rather dynamic, progressive, guitar-and-organ playing with acoustic interludes. The Brits mixed all sorts of genres: rock, folk, blues and psychedelia and wonderful things came out of it! Melodic compositions, sometimes reaching ten minutes - generally much shorter, though. The band's music brings to mind The Strawbs (with sharp guitar), the Danish Culpeper's Orchard, Jethro Tull, CSN&Y and late The Beatles. Great sound! Digipak edition. A must! (JL) -
CD
HARD MEAT - HARD MEAT - Space Between - Recordings 1969-1970 (3CD) - UK Esoteric Remastered Edition - LISTENprice: 140,00 PLN / 35,00 EUR
A three-disc set containing all the recordings made by the British band, playing progressive rock with elements of folk and blues, which may bring to mind Culpeper's Orchard, Jethro Tull, CSN&Y, as well as late Beatles or The Strawbs. The first two CDs contain the albums from 1970, "Hard Meat" and "Through A Window", both released by Warner Bros. The third disc is taken up by a record made in 1969 for Island Records, but then rejected and never released. Only two tracks released on a single saw the light of day, including a cover of The Beatles' "Rain". The remaining seven appear on "Space Between" for the first time! Unfortunately, in the absence of interest, the band split in 1971. The set comes in a rigid box, with a 20-page booklet inside. A must! (MU) -

HARTLEY, KEEF -BAND- (see also: John Mayall / Artwoods / Uriah Heep / Dog Soldier / Hemlock) - THE KEEF HARTLEY BAND – Live at Essen Pop and Blues Festival 1969 / 1970 (2CD)price: 130,00 PLN / 32,50 EUR
A German, two-disc CD containing previously unreleased, official material from the period of the 2nd and 3rd records, recorded at two annual rock festivals in Essen: in 1969 and 1970. Splendid, jazz-blues-progressive playing with extended versions of well-known pieces and with long improvisations. The artwork is rather off-putting, but the music is top-shelf! A MUST! (JL) -
CD
HATE - HATE - Hate Kills - SWE Flawed Gems Edition - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 60,00 PLN / 15,00 EUR
On CD for the first time! Excellent, rather dark and decidedly progressive British playing with dominant Hammond organ parts and nice guitars - so typical of 1970! The whole thing was in the style of the brilliant album by Indian Summer, as well as Procol Harum, a somewhat lighter early Atomic Rooster and early Spooky Tooth (vocals). It is really hard to understand why such a great title had to wait almost 30 years for its CD debut! Satisfaction guaranteed and zero risk! An absolute must! -

HAYSTACKS BALBOA - HAYSTACKS BALBOA - Haystacks Balboa - AUS Survival Research Pressprice: 125,00 PLN / 31,25 EUR
A great, but unfortunately forgotten, album by an American heavy-progressive band, with Larry West (brother of the famous Mountain guitarist) on organ in the line-up. Very juicy and feisty, decidedly 'British' heavy prog rock with slight psychedelic influences, garnished with a good deal of the aforementioned Hammonds. An Australian 2025 reissue. (JL) -
CD
HEAD MACHINE (see also: Gods/Uriah Heep/Ken Hensley) - HEAD MACHINE - Orgasm - 50th Anniversary Re-Master - UK Explore Rights Management Remastered Digipack Edition - LISTENprice: 70,00 PLN / 17,50 EUR
A great, but unfortunately only album by an ephemeral British band, behind whose name lay simply Ken Hensley and The Gods! The LP "Orgasm" was made just before the break-up of The Gods and right before the formation of the group Toe Fat. The band sounded almost identical to Uriah Heep from the period of the first album, that is, it was heavy organ-and-guitar sweeping + two ballads. A British reissue in a digipak, from 2020, to mark the 50th anniversary of the record's release. The booklet contains notes from the producer David Paramor, who approved this reissue, as well as new comments from Ken Hensley, Lee Kerslake and Brian Glascock. Definitely recommended!
