A compilation showing a cross-sectional picture of the Finnish speed and thrash metal scene from its most creative period. Instead of well-known albums, it features tracks coming mainly from rare 7" singles, demos and small releases. Alongside the more recognisable names, such as A.R.G. or Catalepsy, you can hear many bands that never got a full-length album, leaving behind only collectable recordings. The whole shows the diversity of Finnish thrash – from raw speed metal inspired by the European school, through the influence of American thrash, to pieces heralding the emerging death metal. The remastered sound improves the quality of the historic recordings without taking away their raw energy and underground character. A brilliant and genuinely legendary/cult metal compilation from 1981, released by the then fledgling label Neat Records - probably the most important and best company connected with the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement. It is an album that accompanied me at the beginning of my metal adventure in my teenage years and I consider it a genuinely perfect work! In the early 80s the radio programme "Friday Rock Show" (hosted by the legendary DJ Tommy Vance) played a significant role in cementing the popularity of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement. All the tracks were recorded live (with minor overdubs) on excellent equipment and with the best British producers, at the BBC Maida Vale studios in London. This fantastic, 115-minute double compilation (like the also double Volume 2) contains complete, generally 13-18-minute recording sessions (in excellent sound quality) by seven classic bands of the movement, recorded in the period from October 1979 to April 1980. Alongside renowned names such as Def Leppard, Saxon, Angel Witch or Tygers Of Pan Tang, we have here such sensations as Samson (with a very young Bruce Dickinson), the brilliant Trespass (probably the most underrated band of the whole genre) and the melodic but claw-showing Praying Mantis. This beautifully produced (in a stunning cover by Rodney Matthews - the one behind Nazareth's "No Mean City" or Diamond Head's "Borrowed Time") double album contains only music (complete recordings - to the second) - without any announcements! Traditional heavy rock/early metal cannot be better! The sound and pressing quality is excellent! It is an absolute MUST! NEW, SEALED. -

A very attractively produced, three-disc box set from Hear No Evil devoted to the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement in 1979-1985. Plenty of classics and unknown bands, e.g. with a single single to their name. All in all quite a lot of unknown recordings! Perhaps it is not a completely exhaustive release (licensing problems and so on) but flawless as a 'good start'. All the discs are placed in cardboard sleeves and dropped into a rigid, cardboard box. In addition there is a booklet with descriptions, record covers and so on. Recommended! -

It promoted new, then unknown bands (several of which, such as Venom and Raven, achieved considerable popularity, while the guitarist Janick Gers of White Spirit plays in Iron Maiden...) and contained mainly tracks unpublished on records, or their other versions. A remastered 2013 edition. A must! -

A genuinely sensational album from the Maida Vale label, limited to 500 copies, combining two 25-minute performances (in excellent sound quality) by British progressive bands, recorded by the BBC in 1971 and originally released on ultra-rare promotional vinyl by the BBC Transcription Service. The more popular band was Satisfaction, known from an album for the Deram label, a great jazz-prog-rock outfit (with a former guitarist of The Artwoods and a juicy brass section), who on the first side presented four very energetic and passionately played tracks from their only and perhaps slightly underrated album. The completely unknown Tapestry, on the other hand, occupying the second side (also four recordings), came across as downright sensational - an excellent British progressive band resembling folk-progressive Trees and delicate, very early Genesis - with female and male vocals. For unknown reasons the band never signed a record contract, but in August 1971 it played a concert at the BBC's radio headquarters in London, a 25-minute fragment of which was recorded and released in 1971... in 100 copies! I stress: this is fantastic, sophisticated, breathy, melodic progressive playing that should delight every fan of the genre! AN ABSOLUTE MUST! P.S. I also recommend the unique live record, made up of two performances (from 1973), by the groups Wild Turkey and Wolf - also released by Maida Vale! -

A genuinely sensational album from the Maida Vale label, limited to 500 copies, combining two performances of nearly 30 minutes each (in excellent sound quality) by British progressive bands, recorded by the BBC in 1973 and originally released on ultra-rare promotional vinyl by the BBC Transcription Service. Wild Turkey, led by the former Jethro Tull bassist Glenn Cornick, presented probably their best material (three unknown tracks + one originally from the second LP), which unfortunately did not make it onto the unreleased third record. Please listen to these recordings on YouTube! Three of the tracks once appeared as bonuses on the CD "Turkey", but here there is one more track. Wolf, on the other hand, led by the former Curved Air leader - the violinist Darryl Way - play veeery energetic, prog-rock music in the style of early, highly wound-up and slightly more jazzy Kansas. John Etheridge (later in Soft Machine) played guitar, and Ian Mosley (later in Trace, and from 1983 in Marillion) played drums. This is a piece of wonderful top-shelf progressive playing, and please do not be put off by the fact that it is supposedly a compilation, but simply give yourself great pleasure! A must! P.S. I also recommend the unique record by the groups Satisfaction and Tapestry, made up of two performances (from 1971) - also released by Maida Vale! -
