URBANIAK, MICHAŁ GROUP - MICHAŁ URBANIAK GROUP – Sound Pieces (3CD) - MIG Music Editionprice: 130,00 PLN / 32,50 EUR
One of the most interesting releases documenting the work of Michał Urbaniak from the period of his European successes in the early 70s. Two studio albums show the artist freely combining jazz, rock, electric music and elements of the avant-garde, with a distinct place for improvisation and modern compositional structures. The real attraction of the set is the complete concert from the Lila Eule club in Bremen from 1972. A careful remaster. -

URIAH HEEP - URIAH HEEP - Born In A Trunk - A Collection Of Early BBC Sessions, Album Outtakes And Pre-Uriah Heep Psychedelic Rock Material By SPICE (1968-1971) (2LP) - FRA Verne Limited Press - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 170,00 PLN / 42,50 EUR
A superb, limited double-vinyl edition collecting rare or unreleased studio recordings and radio sessions by Uriah Heep from the period of their first three albums (1969-1971)! The 2LP, lasting over 100 minutes, contains, among others, four great tracks from the BBC, in minimally longer or somewhat cleaner versions than on the official CDs. Besides this, four excellent recordings that did not fit on the LP "Salisbury" and finally real rarities: COMPLETELY UNKNOWN radio versions, not previously released on official CDs, somewhat muffled, of three compositions from the LP "Look At Yourself", released only half a year later: "I Wanna Be Free", "Love Machine" and "Shadows Of Grief". Unfortunately the publisher forgot to mention in the note on the back where they come from, so I am informing you that they were recorded for BBC radio on 24 May 1971. Besides this, all eight known recordings by the band Spice (Uriah Heep without Ken Hensley, from 1968-1969) are included: six tracks from an unfinished album from 1969 (including "Born In A Trunk") and both sides of the 1000-euro single "On Love" (1968), from United Artists. With the arrival of Hensley the band changed its name to UH (and the vocalist Garrick changed his surname to Byron) and began to record its real, debut album! The whole thing was released in a very nice, laminated sleeve with several rare photos! It is also a perfect complement to the also double "Crystal Ball - A Collection Of Early Live Performances And Rare Studio Tracks 1971-1974" 2LP - released a few years ago by the sister label Atos Records! AN ABSOLUTE MUST! Condition: MINT, NEW, unsealed. (JL) -

URIAH HEEP - URIAH HEEP - Live In San Diego 1974 - UK Atos / Verne LIMITED Press - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 110,00 PLN / 27,50 EUR
For the first time on vinyl! A very attractively produced, in a laminated sleeve, excellent-sounding material lasting exactly 60 minutes, recorded in February 1974, during the tour promoting the LP "Sweet Freedom" for the famous American programme King Biscuit Flower Hour. The old CD versions contained about 75 minutes of music, but because of the time limit on vinyl a rather average drum solo in "Gypsy" and the 6-minute "Rock'n'Roll Medley" were (inconspicuously) removed. The record sounds even slightly better than the CD versions! Highly recommended! NEW, SEALED. (JL) -

URSA MAJOR (see also: Frost / Amboy Dukes) - URSA MAJOR - Ursa Major - EU Once Again Limited Edition - VERY RARE - LISTENprice: 55,00 PLN / 13,75 EUR
A revelation! Released by RCA in 1972, the only (unfortunately) album by an American trio playing classic, Zeppelin-like, heavy rock with a very good vocal (Greg Arama of the Amboy Dukes!) and splendid guitar parts by the legendary Dick Wagner (ex-Frost, later Alice Cooper and Lou Reed). On this record, produced by Bob Ezrin (Kiss, Pink Floyd), the band offered fairly extended, at times almost progressive, heavy tracks in the style of the best work of Grand Funk, Cactus, Tucky Buzzard and Highway Robbery. This is the top American shelf of heavy rock! It is worth knowing that Al Kooper made a guest appearance on mellotron on the record! A MUST! Condition: New, sealed. (JL) -

URSINY, DEZO - DEZO URSINY THE BEATMEN/THE SOULMEN/ THE NEW SOULMEN - Let's Make A Summer - Pavian Recordsprice: 90,00 PLN / 22,50 EUR
"THE BEATMEN This beat band, formed in Bratislava in 1964, was the first group in Czechoslovakia to acquaint young people with the sound of The Beatles, and it must be admitted that it did so in a very professional way! The leader of The Beatmen was the then 18-year-old guitarist, singing in perfect English, Dežo Ursiny, and with him in the band appeared the 17-19-year-old Miroslav Bedrik - rhythm guitar and vocals, Marián Bednár - bass guitar and vocals, and Peter Petro - drums. After only a few performances at big events the band, looking almost like the idols from Liverpool, won recognition and the fairly widespread opinion of the best beat band in the country - ahead of Olympics and Synkopy 61. At the beginning of 1965 the band released a debut single Break It/Let's Make A Summer containing two original compositions - which was then unheard of! Unfortunately, the only quality that Ursiny's band lacked was the ability to compose very catchy melodies! Because although it must be admitted that both mid-tempo recordings sounded like thoroughbred, juicy Merseybeat from 1964, in England things were composed a little differently... The second Supraphon seven-inch: The Enchanted Lie/Safely Arrived also came out in 1965 and again contained two tracks that were on the one hand fairly dynamic and at times even youthfully shouted (though again played at a medium tempo), but on the other hand hard to hum and somehow... sad. Strangely, on several other recordings the band could play fast and with verve, so why did something hold them back on such important records? In the same year the Supraphon label divided these four songs into two A sides and two B sides and released them on the external market (Eastern Europe) as: Break It/The Enchanted Lie and Let´s Make A Summer/Safely Arrived. I think nobody noticed the difference. In 1966 the band went to Austria where it was made an 'offer it could not refuse', that is emigration. Dazzled and tempted by the possibility of conquering the West, the rhythm guitarist and bassist stayed, but the leader and (after a short time) the drummer returned to Czechoslovakia where Ursiny founded another, unfortunately short-lived Slovak legend - The Soulmen. The new musicians of The Beatmen became George Eperjessy and (probably German) drummer Arno Biller and in the new line-up the single Stand Up And Go/As You Love Me was made, released by the microscopic German label Intersound, now ultra-rare and worth 400 euros. The first side of the disc, decorated with a colour sleeve with a photo, was filled by a Beatles-like, though recalling a little the early Pretty Things, very rhythmic rock piece with a splendid, fast guitar solo quoting a very popular folk theme. On side B, on the other hand, was a psychedelic, slow number close to the style of the Byrds of the time! In my humble opinion, this was better and certainly more convincing playing than both of the Supraphon discs, genuinely adored in their home country, although I am sure that Czech beat lovers would certainly curse me for this opinion! In 2017 the label Indies Happy Trails released the CD The Beatmen Are Goin' On - Live In Bratislava 1965 containing two archival performances from October 1965, when the quartet performed before the group Manfred Mann." REVIEW BY JACEK LEŚNIEWSKI FROM A BOOK ON ROCK FROM THE FORMER EASTERN BLOC, BEGUN BUT ABANDONED AFTER HALF A YEAR (2021). A compilation edition in a 2024 digipak, new, sealed. -

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR - VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR - BBC Sessions 1968-1971 (2LP) - FRA Verne Records Limited Press - LISTEN - VERY RAREprice: 170,00 PLN / 42,50 EUR
Lasting nearly 120 minutes, an excellent, limited double album containing fantastic material recorded by the progressive Brits during several different sessions for BBC radio - live (with minimal overdubs) in the studio, as well as during two performances. This is the earliest Van der Graaf - from the period of the first four, best records. Half the recordings appeared earlier on the LPs "After The Flood" and "Visions" (both released by Verne and now out of print), but 50 minutes had not previously appeared on vinyl (including "Lost" from the October 1970 session, or the 27-minute live excerpt from September 1971 containing, among others, a short cover of "Dambuster March" - importantly - at the correct speed)! It is also worth mentioning that "Killer" from October 1970 is in its full, 8-minute form and sounds miles better than the unfinished version on the official CD box set! All the tracks sound perfect (or close to ideal), except for a few rarities, such as the officially unreleased "Octopus" (from October 1968) and the live "Squid 1/Squid 2" and "Whatever Robert Would Have Said" (both from August 1970) - recorded in an amateur way by fans, from the radio. A must! Condition: MINT, NEW, unsealed. (JL) -
