Very good debut album by the Aphrodite's Child vocalist - then slowly heading towards a solo career. Released in 1971, the LP (made just before the brilliant "666") can safely be called the third AC album, all the more so as musicians from that group helped in its recording. It is ambitious, melodic pop rock with clear influences of Greek folk and progressive music. Besides, Demis had a genuinely charming voice! Recommended! (JL) -

This excellent debut album by an Italian band was recorded 'live' in the studio and contained a good portion of uncompromising guitar rock built on heavy riffs and strong rhythms. One of the heaviest-sounding records of those years - at times beating Sabbath, Budgie and Buffalo - everything! Later the band toned down its sound a little, but still played very nicely. Highly recommended! -

Another, somewhat forgotten, krautrock gem! After the self-financed release in January 1971 of the strongly Jethro Tull-like debut album 'Weiss Der Teufel' the band was snapped up by the progressive-folk label Pilz and in the same year the splendid Phallobst reached the shops. The record combined, in a striking way, classic, at times heavyish progressive rock with elements of folk, blues and psychedelia, and its sound, as on the debut, relied among other things on the characteristic flute, restrained but charming vocal parts and of course on extended instrumental parts. So, not far from what the Jethro Tull musicians offered on their 'Benefit' and 'Aqualung'! The German band did not waste its time in the studio - the 'second one' sounded more professional than the (in its own way splendid, raw-sounding) debut; moreover the musicians did not shy away from experiments with sound or striking changes (speeding-ups) of tempo. Of course this is not music that grabs you the first time, but it is very rewarding after several listens! Additionally 5 demo recordings from 1972 are included, intended for the third album 'Avalon And On', unreleased at the time. Without doubt this is the best-sounding CD version! A MUST! A revelation! The debut, truly exquisite album by a German progressive band, released in January 1971, strongly reminiscent of early Jethro Tull recordings, but served more raw and in a slightly psychedelic style. Clear melodies, plenty of flute, dense drums, overdriven guitar. The band released the record at its own expense in a run of 500 copies, and original vinyls in the rarely seen, great condition are worth over 1000 euros! Additionally included are two tracks from 1970 which did not fit on the original LP and an early version of a track that appeared on the second album, "Phallobst" (1971). In my opinion it is one of the best ten titles from the circle of German prog rock! Without doubt this is the best-sounding CD version! A MUST! Condition: New, sealed. (JL) -

A set containing all the recordings by the highly respected American artist made for BBC radio and television in 1972-1982, remastered from the original master tapes. These are: a performance for BBC Radio One "In Concert" from 6 July 1972 at the Paris Theatre in London and two tracks from 14 October 1975 for "Old Grey Whistle Test" (CD1), a concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London for BBC Radio One "In Concert", 9 October 1975 (CD2) and a performance on 25 January 1977 at Oxford Polytechnic, for BBC Radio One "In Concert" (CD3). Additionally the set contains a DVD with three recordings from "Old Grey Whistle Test": from 14 October 1975, 2 May 1978 and 3 June 1982 and a promotional clip from the last of them. The only album by this English band is a combination of rock, jazz and a pinch of blues (sharp guitar, organ and vibrating saxophone). All in all, somewhat difficult, though very exciting music was created. The guitarist Ray Russell had earlier played in Rock Workshop and worked with Bob Downes and Bill Fay. The record was released by the Neon label (among others Spring, Indian Summer, Tonton Macoute and Raw Material). Remastered 2022 Spanish reissue. (JL)
