New Wave of British Heavy Metal, sometimes abbreviated to NWOBHM, is a music genre that began in the late seventies. It was inspired by punk rock and by classic heavy metal in the vein of Black Sabbath, UFO and Thin Lizzy. It also borrows from many other genres, such as progressive rock. At first, artists working in this genre were very unfairly regarded as talentless, making "garage" singles (small records) at minimal cost in improvised studios. Many of the first records by British heavy metal stars came out in very small runs. Today they are sought after by devoted collectors of hard-to-find albums. In time, stars such as Iron Maiden and Def Leppard won well-deserved international recognition among fans of heavy music and spread the genre around the world.
