Age Of Taurus is yet another young doom metal (or, if you prefer, stoner rock) British formation playing heavy rock inspired above all by the work of old Black Sabbath, though the music on this CD could also be compared with the work of Hammers Of Misfortune (especially from the period of the second album). It must be admitted that this kind of playing (though not very original) definitely holds its own, especially as both the band's playing and the compositions themselves are at a really good level. If someone likes old, heavy "Sabbath-style" playing, there is simply no way that the music on this album would not appeal to them... Recommended (K). -

SENSATIONAL! After just two listens I became a firm fan of this record! Released by the label Rise Above, a superb album by this British formation which, unlike hundreds of contemporary bands modelling themselves on the output of groups such as Black Sabbath, Cream or Led Zeppelin, contains ten superb tracks harking directly back to the "golden years" of British psychedelia and the garage-beat playing of the 60s. Personally I have the impression that if someone were to put one of these compositions on a "Nuggets" or "Rubble" compilation next to such formations as Seeds, Blossom Toes or Open Mind, literally nobody would notice that it is a recording from 2013!!! Truly superb playing, sounding like 1966-68, which can certainly be recommended to all fans of the 60s! Definitely recommended!!! (K) Gatefold paper sleeve. -

Here is another of Martin Popoff's more than 40 books – one of the most prolific music journalists in the broadly understood Rock world. A richly illustrated history of the world's best-known metal band (presented in a nutshell, without needless gossip and deliberation about the private lives of the band members, with really few exceptions), containing nothing but hard facts about releases, concerts, the making of the recordings and over 300 unique photographs (from various periods of the band, concert posters, tickets, passes and T-shirts), published in a large format, in full colour, on coated paper. The history described begins shortly before the formation of Metallica, where, under the influence of a fascination with the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal and resistance to the then dominant trend of Glam Rock, the idea of starting a band is born, and then Metallica's first line-up and first tracks come into being, which set off an avalanche of many later events, bringing the band to the very peak of popularity that lasts to this day. The content of the book usually revolves around the events connected with each album released, presenting descriptions of each release, short analyses of individual tracks with passing information about the lyrical and graphic side. The information contained in the book is supported by direct statements, thoughts and reflections of the musicians (current and former) as well as managers or producers. Of course, apart from presenting the band's road to the very peak of fame, there is no lack of recollections concerning the commotion around the band's status and the difficult period in Metallica's history, from the release of the controversial album "Load" to the appearance of the album "St. Anger" and the presentation of the motives and decisions taken at that time concerning the further image, as well as the musical style adopted. Since the band's story went on, the last pages of this book bring us further provocative events (such as the latest line-up changes – the replacement of Jason Newsted with Robert Trujillo and the realisation of the "Lulu" project with Lou Reed) and the triumphant return to roots with the album "Death Magnetic". Unfortunately every publication has its end, and a good ending to the book is the musicians' statements about a possible end of their career, and moreover variety is provided by interesting reviews of the band's studio albums (written by well-known music journalists) and a full, detailed discography, descriptions of selected singles, live material and videography. Today we already know that after this unofficial publication was written the band released another great album "Hardwired…To Self-Destruct" and is still in great form, and so this is not the end of the story. 192 pages, large format, richly illustrated, full colour, hardback. -

The "Best Of" compilation by Puhdys, one of the best-known rock bands from the former GDR, shows the group above all as an efficient, thoroughbred rock band with a very distinctive sound. Classic, guitar-driven arrangements dominate here - solid riffs, clear, melodic solos and a clearly rooted rhythm section. Tracks such as "Ikarus" or "Geh zu ihr" rest on a strong foundation of bass and drums, over which broad, slightly pompous vocal lines are built. The sound is tight but not heavy - it is mainstream rock, with a clear emphasis on melody and chorus. A characteristic element is also the keyboards, which in many recordings subtly complement the guitar, giving the whole a slightly spacious, at times almost symphonic shade. In the ballads the tempo slows down and the arrangements become more sparing, but the band avoids excessive sweetness - even the calmer tracks have a distinct rock backbone. The production is typical of its time - clear, without excessive compression, with a natural sound of the instruments. Thanks to this the compilation sounds coherent and authentic, and its greatest strength remains the band's craftsmanship: a feel for melody, proportion and dynamics. It is a set that shows Puhdys as a mature, classic rock band - without experiments, but with great musical consistency and a recognisable style. New, sealed. -

NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER: The third vinyl record by Skaldowie, released in 2013 by Kameleon - this time with material never published on any format!!! The LP contains eight (purely progressive, as the title suggests) recordings made in East Germany in 1970-1976, lasting more than 44 minutes in total. They are studio recordings of the highest quality. The tracks included here are German counterparts of the following recordings: "Aż do gwiazd", "Od wschodu do zachodu słońca", "Street 2000", "Czasem kochać chcesz", "Prawo Izaaka Newtona", "Jak znikający punkt", "W oknach otwartych", "Cisza krzyczy". All the tracks were sung in German. To all those who are put off buying the record by this, we assure you that in the case of the dynamic, improvisation-filled instrumental parts of the tracks it is not the slightest problem. As many as seven compositions are published here for the first time in history - we are ready to risk saying that this is one of the two or three best progressive materials by Skaldowie ever released. The vinyl has a beautiful, glossy, laminated gatefold sleeve. The LP run is only 250 copies!!! A MUST FOR FANS! -
