Writing the first volume (A-F) of the record guide to British rock took me nearly 3 years, but it was probably worth it! On 520 COLOUR pages I have included over 1000 record reviews (often track by track) of as many as 360 artists active in the British Isles in the 60s and 70s. Printed on thick, coated paper, the book contains as many as 1700 colour reproductions (6cm by 6 cm) of the covers of original LPs, singles, EPs and CDs, as well as scans of first-edition vinyl labels only for selected releases (Vertigo, Harvest, Island, Deram etc). Additionally, at the end of each entry I have included full discographies (up to and including 1979) of catalogue albums (the A and B sides of all singles appear in the text instead), and I have also listed the more important CDs with archive material. I wrote this book for myself too, so I really put my back into it! Oh, and I have rated every title subjectively (on a scale of 1-10) - which can be very useful when hunting for records. The fifth album and at the same time the first under the shortened name Slough Feg (previously The Lord Weird Slough Feg) - without a doubt the most underrated band of the last 15 years! Well, let us hope that this will finally change! "Atavism" was the third and last album recorded with the (second) guitarist and at the same time leader of the excellent band Hammers Of Misfortune (in which Slough Feg's vocalist Mike Scalzi was also involved) - John Cobbett. It is an album somewhat different from the brilliant "Traveller" (2003) that preceded it - although the playing here was still dense, heavy, and at times fast, intricate and almost progressive, the group introduced somewhat more acoustic elements and bet even more on melody. The melodies, in turn, are so catchy that when it ends your hand reaches for the PLAY button on its own! Another fantastic piece of material, whose only flaw is (like most of the band's records) its running time: 38 minutes. I devote a good deal of space to the Californians, but they genuinely deserve it. Indeed, instead of languishing in the underground (tickled by the unanimous delight of metal fans and critics - please check online...) - it is they who should be playing stadiums for tens of thousands of spectators! "Live At Rockpalast – Leverkusen 2005" documents Van der Graaf Generator in an excellent line-up, presenting a repertoire based both on the classics "Lemmings", "Man-Eng" and "Killer" and on the later "Every Bloody Emperor". The combination of organs, saxophones, drums and Hammill's expressive vocal creates a heavy, multi-layered sound. It is the only full Van der Graaf Generator concert from 2005 that was filmed, and the performance in Leverkusen was the culmination of the band's reunion tour.
