The concert of 19 May 1961 was Miles Davis's first public appearance with Gil Evans's orchestra. The original Columbia album was released in 1962. It is an exceptional meeting of the Miles Davis quintet with Gil Evans's expanded orchestra, in which the restrained, economical trumpet and Hank Mobley's saxophone parts contrast with rich, carefully scored arrangements for brass, woodwind and strings. Alongside outstanding interpretations of "So What" and "No Blues", the orchestral versions of "The Meaning of the Blues / Lament" and "New Rhumba" are particularly interesting, showing Evans's remarkable ability to combine jazz improvisation with expansive symphonic form.
