The debut (concept) album by The Mars Volta. The story presented on it is based on a tale written by the band's vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala and sound engineer Jeremy Michael Ward. It is an hour-long story about Cerpin Taxt, a man who tries to commit suicide by overdosing on morphine. As a result of this attempt he falls into a week-long coma, during which he experiences visions of humanity and of his own psyche. On waking he is filled with dissatisfaction with the real world and kills himself. The story of Cerpin Taxt is based on the death of the artist and Bixler-Zavala's friend from El Paso - Julio Venegas.
