LEVIATHAN (UK psych) (see also: Mike Stuart Span) - LEVIATHAN - Unleashed +6 - EU Magic Potion Expanded Limited Edition - VERY RARE - LISTEN
A revelation! Recorded for Elektra in the spring and summer of 1969, but halted literally at the last moment, this is the legendary heavy-psychedelic album by the British band Leviathan (not to be confused with the hard progressive rock band from the USA), who had previously operated under the name Mike Stuart Span. The band released three excellent singles and was meant to record an album, which never happened. The CD contains the very best of heavyish, quite catchy British rock from 1968 and 1969! Inevitably, you can clearly hear the influence of Hendrix, Cream, Fleetwood Mac with Green and the whole of that maddening, though forgotten, British psychedelia in the vein of Open Mind, The Attack or Wimple Winch. The sound quality is excellent, and musically there are no fillers, just classic, meaty rock! As with the likewise halted album by the Canterbury progressive group Glass, one can only speculate what would have happened had the Leviathan LP been released at the time by a big, influential label like Elektra! In addition, two single versions are included, and (more importantly) four fantastic heavy-psychedelic recordings by Mike Stuart Span, in an identical vein (this was simply Leviathan with an unchanged line-up, under the earlier name known from their rare singles), made for John Peel's programme on the BBC in May 1968. ABSOLUTE MUST! (JL)
